... Read moreMy first gameday working as a college sports marketing intern was truly unforgettable! It's one thing to be a fan in the stands, but being behind the scenes at a venue like Snapdragon Stadium completely changes your perspective. You see all the moving parts that go into creating that electric atmosphere. For anyone dreaming of a sports marketing internship, I wanted to share a bit more about what I’ve learned and some tips that might help you get your foot in the door. Landing an internship, especially in a competitive field like college sports, often starts with networking and showing genuine passion. I spent a lot of time researching programs, reaching out to professionals on LinkedIn, and attending sports industry events on campus. Don't be afraid to volunteer for campus sports clubs or local teams – practical experience, even unpaid, is invaluable. Once you're in, be ready for anything! Gamedays are incredibly dynamic. My day often starts hours before kickoff, sometimes even before the sun is fully up, getting everything ready for fan engagement. From coordinating promotional giveaways, like those 40+ boxes of Hawaiian shirts we handed out, to setting up interactive zones like the spin-the-wheel table for prizes, there’s always something to do. It’s physically demanding – trust me, hauling those boxes can be a workout! – but the energy of the crowd and seeing fans enjoy what you’ve helped create is so rewarding. Beyond the physical tasks, a key part of the role is understanding fan engagement. We're constantly thinking about how to enhance the fan experience and create memorable moments. This could involve everything from setting up specific photo opportunities to ensuring smooth distribution of game-day flyers or unique merchandise. I even saw some of the live fan voting displays, like the COLLEGE GAMEDAY FAN VOTE results, and it highlights how much interaction is happening throughout the stadium, including updates for teams like PENN STATE, WEST VIRGINIA, MIAMI AT FLORIDA, often broadcast on ESPN+ with specific INSIGNIA. The skills you develop are immense: teamwork, problem-solving, time management, and communication. You learn to adapt quickly when unexpected challenges arise, which happens a lot in live events! Seeing the Aztecs get that 'W' in Snapdragon Stadium after all the hard work makes it all worth it. If you're passionate about sports and marketing, an internship like this is an incredible way to learn the ropes and figure out if this career path is for you. It's not just about watching the game; it's about being an integral part of making the magic happen. Don't underestimate the power of showing up, being enthusiastic, and soaking in every learning opportunity.
