♡ Tips for a New Puppy ♡
getting a new puppy is one of the most exciting things in life! having a sweet, cuddly, little friend by your side is the best! but what’s better is having a trained dog by your side!
☆ these are some tips and things i thing are very important when it coming to raising a new pup!
☆ BUYING THE ESSENTIALS
- FOOD: make sure you know what type/brand of food your breeding has been feeding the pup so you can purchase the same. this prevents your pup from getting sick from switching its diet up
- TOYS: puppy’s love to chew on everything so make sure you introduce things that they are allowed to play with like tons of different types of toys. make sure to get different textures/types to see what your pup likes most! (tennis balls, ropes, rubber, stuffys, etc!)
- COLLAR/LEASH: it’s important to get you pup used to collars at a young age so they are not easily irritated by a collar being on them when they are older
- TREATS: training treats are a must when you want to teach your dog wrong from right! dental treats are also a good idea so your pup gets used ti things like this and don’t become picky!
- BED/CRATE: crate/kennel training is a good idea to start doing the first day your pup is home to help with potty training and just getting used to it! giving them their own bed can help with them learning to be alone and not needing constant intact while sleeping.
☆ CRATE/KENNEL TRAINING
- training your pup to sleep in a kennel the first few weeks/months is great for potty training and obedience. getting a kennel that is not too big (no room to walk around) is very important. this keeps them from going to the bathroom in the kennel and teaches them to hold it until they are let out. a kennel also teaches them to be independent sleepers!
☆ OTHER ANIMAL SOCIALIZING
- taking your dog around other animals from a puppy to when they are grown is very important! this will help with temper, dominance, and reactiveness issues. bringing them around other animals teaches them how to play nicely and not be aggressive in the future.
☆ LEASH TRAINING
- if you plan on taking your dogs in walk or in public it is a good idea to introduce leashes at a young age. this way they know what it is and how to walk along side you without pulling and staggering to anything they wish to smell/see. this can teach them to be obedient to you and your commands.
☆ CAR RIDES
- taking your pup along in car rides is a great idea if you plan on bringing you dog places with you. this helps them get over motion sickness and fear of the vehicle in general. try to always let them sit in the same place so they know they can not jump around the vehicle and distract you while you are driving. rolling windows down so they have a breeze and smells to occupy them during the ride.
☆ NEW EXPERIENCES
- let your pup experience things with you! going for hikes, swimming, sporting events, etc is great ways to keep your dog happy and excited!
☆ EXPOSURE TO CHILDREN
- allowing your puppy around children is very important for behavioral development. this teaches your dog not to be or play aggressively when around children!
☆ PUBLIC PLACES
- it’s a good idea to get your dog used to loud and chaotic environments if you plan to bring your dog in public when they are older. taking them to events and other public places in a gray way to teach them to listen to commands even with distractions around them.
I hope those tips help! they sure have helped me and my pup (she is 3 now!)
happy puppy days! ♡
