Thanks for coming to my ted talk
Having worked in labor and delivery, I've seen firsthand how crucial it is for birthing individuals to feel respected and heard. While birth can be unpredictable and plans may not always go as expected, having clear preferences is not unrealistic or difficult—it is a vital part of owning your birth experience. In my experience, many expectant mothers hesitate to voice their wishes out of fear of being labeled 'difficult' or because they feel the outcomes may not be entirely in their control. However, it’s important to remember that labor isn’t something happening to you; it’s a transformative journey you actively go through. Advocating for your preferences—whether about pain management, interventions, or who is present during birth—helps ensure that your safety, humanity, and emotional needs are honored in the process. I encourage pregnant individuals to prepare their birth plans thoughtfully but also remain flexible. This balance between preparation and openness allows for adapting to medical realities without losing sight of individual values. Also, don’t hesitate to ask questions and engage in conversations with your healthcare providers early on so you feel informed and supported. Ultimately, a positive birth story is one where you feel heard, respected, and safe—not necessarily one where everything goes exactly as planned. Stop apologizing for your preferences. Your voice matters, and advocating for yourself is a critical part of achieving a birth experience you can confidently embrace and remember with pride.
