What’s your favorite stop along the PCH? #LA #LABucketList
Oh my goodness, if you're dreaming of an unforgettable adventure, a Pacific Coast Highway road trip is an absolute must-do! I recently drove a stretch of the PCH, and it was truly one of the most stunning journeys I've ever experienced. From the moment you hit the coast, whether you're coming from bustling San Francisco or vibrant Los Angeles, the dramatic cliffs, crashing waves, and endless ocean views are just mesmerizing. It’s not just a drive; it’s an experience where every turn reveals a new postcard-perfect scene. The three stops I highlighted—Morro Rock, Pfeiffer Beach, and Bixby Creek Bridge—are non-negotiable for a reason. Morro Rock, that massive volcanic plug, is such an iconic landmark. When I pulled up, seeing its sheer size against the ocean was incredible, and I even spotted some sea otters playing nearby! Then there’s Pfeiffer Beach, with its unique purple sand and the famous Keyhole Arch. It felt like stepping into another world, especially during sunset when the light streams through the arch. And of course, the Bixby Creek Bridge! It’s even more magnificent in person; an engineering marvel that offers some of the most classic Big Sur photo opportunities. Seriously, prepare for your camera roll to be full. But the beauty of a PCH road trip is that there’s so much more to discover beyond these highlights. As you journey along the coast, consider stopping in charming towns like San Luis Obispo (affectionately known as SLO). It’s a fantastic place to spend a night, with a lively downtown, the famous Bubblegum Alley, and plenty of great food. If you're willing to venture slightly inland, the Paso Robles wine region isn't too far off the beaten path and offers some incredible vineyards to explore. I also recommend keeping an eye out for smaller, less-known turnouts. Sometimes the best views are from an unmarked pull-off that offers a secluded vista of the endless Pacific. Planning your PCH adventure is part of the fun! To truly soak it all in, I’d suggest dedicating at least 3-5 days. Driving north to south (San Francisco to Los Angeles) generally keeps you on the ocean side of the road, offering unobstructed views, which I found made a huge difference. Don’t forget to make reservations for accommodations, especially in popular spots like Big Sur, as they fill up quickly. A good map (or a reliable offline GPS, as cell service can be spotty in some areas) is essential for navigating and finding those hidden gems. While you might start your journey from an inland city like San Jose, it’s a straightforward drive to connect to the coastal highways, leading you directly to this epic adventure. Pack layers, bring snacks, and most importantly, allow yourself to get lost in the magic of the California coastline!
