This means you might need to bring or rent a kayak or stand-up paddleboard (SUP) – which, for me and my golden retriever, Finch, is half the fun! There are usually local outfitters near popular spring areas that offer rentals, making it easy even if you don't own your own gear. Always check if parking is free or requires a small fee, and arrive early on weekends, especially for popular launch spots, to secure a good parking space. Choosing Your Perfect Spring Adventure With so many incredible natural springs in the Panhandle, how do you pick the 'best' one for your day out? It really depends on what you're looking for! If peace and quiet are your priority, springs only accessible by paddle are usually less crowded. For stunning visuals and great swimming, look for springs with wide, open areas and easy water entry like Morrison, though be prepared for crowds there. If wildlife viewing is on your list, exploring the narrower spring runs early in the morning often yields sightings of turtles, fish, and even playful otters. The clear water here is perfect for spotting them! Essential Gear & Safety for a Smooth Trip No matter which spring you choose, coming prepared makes all the difference. Beyond your paddle craft, I always recommend bringing plenty of water, snacks, and a dry bag for your phone, keys, and wallet. Sun protection is crucial – hats, sunglasses, and reef-safe sunscreen are a must, as you'll be exposed to the Florida sun for hours. Water shoes are also super handy for navigating potentially rocky or sandy banks. If you're bringing a furry friend like Finch, make sure they have a life vest and are comfortable on your SUP or kayak.
