Nightly routine for my girls 🥰
Getting our little ones ready for bed can sometimes feel like a full-time job, right? For the longest time, I struggled to find a routine that truly worked for my girls, helping them transition from energetic play to a calm, restful sleep. That's when I realized it wasn't just about a 'bedtime routine' but a 'nightly self-care routine' – focusing on their emotional and physical well-being before sleep. I've learned that a consistent self-care routine at night is incredibly beneficial for kids. It's not just about brushing teeth and putting on pajamas; it's about creating a peaceful winding-down period that signals to their bodies and minds that it's time to rest. For my girls, this has made a huge difference in how easily they fall asleep and how well they stay asleep throughout the night. It also helps them manage their emotions from the day and feel secure. So, what does this look like for us? Here are some steps we've found to be incredibly helpful to get my girls ready for bed: First, we start with a warm bath. It's amazing how a simple soak can relax their little muscles and calm their minds. We might add some lavender essential oil to the bathwater, or a fun bath bomb, making it a special, sensory experience rather than just a chore. Following the bath, it's straight into comfy pajamas – something soft and cozy is key. We also make sure the bedroom is a serene environment, with dim lighting and a comfortable temperature. Next, we dedicate some time to quiet activities. This usually involves reading books together. Each of my daughters gets to pick a story, and we snuggle up. This shared time is so precious, and it helps them shift their focus away from screens or active play. Sometimes, they prefer to draw quietly or listen to some calming music. The idea is to avoid anything too stimulating at least an hour before sleep. After stories, we do a quick 'body scan' or gentle stretches. I encourage them to lie down and notice how their bodies feel, wiggling their toes and fingers, then relaxing each part. We might also practice some deep breathing exercises – smelling an imaginary flower and blowing out an imaginary candle. It sounds simple, but it teaches them to connect with their bodies and release tension. Finally, we end with a little chat about their day. It’s a chance for them to share any worries or exciting moments they might have experienced. I often find that just talking things through helps clear their minds before sleep. A quick hug, a kiss, and a reminder that I'll see them in the morning, and they're usually drifting off to dreamland. This entire process has transformed our evenings from chaotic to calm, and I truly believe it's because we've embraced the idea of self-care as an integral part of their nightly routine. Thanks for watching and I hope this helps you too!
