Since discovering how incredibly effective and easy homemade cough drops are, I've been on a mission to find even more natural ways to tackle those pesky coughs and clear up phlegm. It’s amazing how much relief you can find right in your own kitchen! These homemade remedies, just like our beloved HOMEMADE COUGH DROPS, not only taste better but also often work wonders without any artificial additives. One common question I've heard is about a 'cough drop drink.' While you can certainly dissolve one of your DIY homemade cough drops in a warm mug of water or herbal tea for a comforting sip, there are also fantastic drink recipes you can whip up that act like a liquid version of a cough drop, specifically designed to be a great cough with phlegm remedy. My absolute favorite is a potent Honey-Ginger-Lemon Soother. Here’s how I make it: Honey-Ginger-Lemon Soother (Your Liquid Cough Drop!) Ingredients: 1 cup hot water (not boiling) 2 tablespoons fresh lemon juice 1 tablespoon raw honey (or more to taste) 1 teaspoon grated fresh ginger Pinch of cayenne pepper (optional, but great for breaking up mucus!) Pinch of turmeric powder (optional, for anti-inflammatory benefits) Instructions: Steep the grated ginger in the hot water for about 5 minutes, then strain (or leave it in for extra kick!). Stir in the lemon juice, honey, cayenne, and turmeric until well combined. Sip slowly while warm. This drink is incredibly soothing for a sore throat and really helps loosen up chest congestion. The ginger is a natural anti-inflammatory and decongestant, while lemon and honey are classic cough suppressants. Beyond this lovely drink and our trusty homemade cough drops, there are several other practical cough with phlegm remedies I rely on. These simple additions can make a huge difference when you're battling a cold or flu: Steam Inhalation: This is a classic for a reason! When my chest feels heavy with phlegm, I boil some water, pour it into a large bowl, and add a few drops of eucalyptus or peppermint essential oil (optional, but helpful). Then, I drape a towel over my head and the bowl, inhaling the steam deeply for 5-10 minutes. It's incredible for loosening mucus and clearing airways. Just be careful not to get too close to the hot water! Stay Hydrated with Warm Liquids: This can't be stressed enough. Drinking plenty of fluids, especially warm ones like herbal teas, chicken broth, or just plain warm water, helps to thin mucus, making it easier to expel. I always keep a thermos of warm tea nearby when I'm feeling under the weather. Saltwater Gargle: For a sore, phlegm-filled throat, a saltwater gargle is a lifesaver. Dissolve half a teaspoon of salt in a glass of warm water and gargle for about 30 seconds several times a day. It helps reduce inflammation and can draw out mucus from your throat. Elevate Your Head While Sleeping: If you're struggling with a nighttime cough exacerbated by mucus, try sleeping with your head slightly elevated. I usually add an extra pillow or two. This helps prevent mucus from pooling in your throat and causing irritation, leading to a more restful night. Consider Diet: While not a quick fix, some foods can help. Spicy foods, for example, can sometimes help thin mucus. Pineapple juice contains an enzyme called bromelain, which is thought to have mucolytic properties. On the flip side, some people find that dairy products can thicken mucus, so you might consider temporarily reducing dairy intake if you notice it makes your phlegm worse. These natural approaches, combined with the power of our HOMEMADE COUGH DROPS, make a complete arsenal against coughs and phlegm. It's all about listening to your body and finding what works best for you!
