Happy Wednesday. Whew!!😅 We have been BUSSSSSY this week. We moved a lot of birds around to be more organized and enlarged many Silkie pens 😍. Some of the breeding pens will be on hold as we begin clearing land. The new coop (from the neighbor) is completed and the girls are moving in today! Some new boys moved into Merlot’s pen. You thought he was strutting before….. 😂😂😂 Here’s to more Mid-Week farm shenanigans 🙃💕 #wednesdayvibes #silkies #silkiechicken #merlot #theboys #boypen #mancave #crazychickenlady #farmher #farmgirllife #backyardchickens
Managing a backyard farm, especially raising Silkie chickens, can be both demanding and incredibly rewarding. From personal experience, reorganizing pens to optimize space and improve living conditions plays a crucial role in the health and behavior of the birds. Enlarging Silkie pens not only gives the chickens more room to roam but also reduces stress and aggression during breeding seasons. When expanding or moving coops, it’s important to maintain a familiar environment to minimize disruption. Introducing new males, like the ones that joined Merlot’s pen, requires patience and observation to ensure the flock dynamics stay healthy. Building or acquiring structures such as a new coop can significantly enhance daily farm operations. A well-designed coop provides shelter from harsh weather and predators, while making cleaning and management easier. I’ve found it helpful to repurpose or collaborate with neighbors for materials or pre-built coops, saving time and costs. Daily care routines, including feeding, cleaning, and monitoring the birds, become more manageable when the setup is organized. Tracking each pen’s space and occupancy helps in planning for future expansions or breeding pauses, especially during land clearing or other farm projects. Above all, embracing the humor and personality of the birds — from Merlot’s strutting to the boys settling in — adds joy to farm life. Sharing these moments, whether through hashtags like #silkies or #backyardchickens, connects you with a supportive community of fellow enthusiasts who understand the ups and downs of small-scale poultry farming.
