National Walking the Dog Day

Studies have found that roughly 40 percent of Americans don't pick up after their dogs' waste. Dog waste accounts for 24 percent of the bacteria that pollutes our urban and suburban waterways.

We have a huge backyard that our dog gets to play in. I am not very good about walking her and she enjoys it sooo much!

In the video she has a choke collar on as we were working on her not lunging out the front door. As you may notice I don't have it choking her and she is walking very nicely on a loose lead.

Walking your dog isn't merely exercise for them; it’s a bonding experience that benefits both pet and owner mentally and physically. One thing I noticed after committing to more regular walks is how much happier and better behaved my dog became. Even though we have a large backyard where she can play freely, she clearly enjoys the stimulation and interaction that outdoor walks bring. It encourages both mental engagement and physical stamina. It's also important to address responsible pet ownership during these walks. Studies highlight that around 40 percent of Americans neglect to pick up their dogs' waste, contributing significantly—around 24 percent—to bacterial pollution in urban and suburban waterways. This really opened my eyes; carrying poop bags on every walk is now part of my routine. It's a small effort that helps keep our community and environment safe and clean. Regarding equipment, it’s wise to use the right collar or harness. For example, I used a choke collar temporarily while training my dog not to lunge at the door. However, I ensured it was used humanely, never choking her, maintaining a loose lead during our walks. Positive reinforcement and gentle guidance are key for enjoyable and safe dog walks. On National Walking the Dog Day, consider making a special effort to take your dog for an extra-long stroll or explore a new park. It’s a perfect opportunity to celebrate your pet and raise awareness about the environmental impact of dog waste. Plus, the fresh air and exercise you both get is a wonderful bonus! In summary, National Walking the Dog Day serves as a reminder of the joy and responsibilities that come with dog ownership, promoting health, happiness, and environmental mindfulness. I encourage all dog owners to participate – your furry friends will definitely thank you!
