Contrary to popular belief, the pygmy hippo isn't just a miniature common hippo! While they are distant cousins, these two species have many differences. Biologists even gave them distinct names: Choeropsis liberiensis for pygmy hippos and Hippopotamus amphibius for common hippos.
Pygmy hippos have a rounder, shorter snout with smaller, less protruding nostrils. Their feet are also less webbed than their common hippo cousins, as they spend more time on land.

When I read about their 'blood sweat,' a pinkish secretion, I was fascinated by its dual function as a sunscreen and antibacterial agent – nature’s clever way of helping them stay safe and healthy. In terms of behavior, pygmy hippos are notably solitary and shy, preferring solitude outside of mating periods. This introverted lifestyle makes them harder to spot in the wild, which adds to their mysterious appeal. During my last visit to a wildlife sanctuary, I noticed that pygmy hippos appeared more reserved and calm compared to the more social common hippos sharing their environment.
