May 16th 🐎 🐴 Horse Rescue Day

Today, May 16th, is Horse Rescue Day! Did you know the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (ASPCA) was founded by Henry Bergh?

Bergh, an abolitionist, retired early from his shipbuilding business. While in St. Petersburg as part of the American delegation during the Civil War, he witnessed a man mercilessly beating his fallen cart horse. This disturbing event prompted him to intervene and later led him to meet with the president of the Royal Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals in London.

Upon returning to New York, Bergh used his own funds and efforts to establish the ASPCA, receiving a public charter in 1866. He became the first president of the first animal-welfare organization in the U.S. (philanthropyroundtable.org).

It’s remarkable to reflect on Henry Bergh’s commitment, sparked by witnessing cruelty firsthand during the Civil War era. His foundation of the ASPCA set a precedent for humane treatment of animals, including horses that often endured harsh labor and mistreatment. In recent years, the focus on horse rescue has grown significantly. Organizations dedicated to rescuing and rehabilitating abused or neglected horses play an essential role in giving these majestic animals a second chance. From my visits to local equine rescues, I've seen firsthand how care, patience, and medical attention help injured or abandoned horses recover both physically and emotionally. Horse Rescue Day serves as a powerful reminder that animal welfare is an ongoing effort. Whether it’s donating to horse sanctuaries, volunteering time, or simply spreading awareness, every action counts. If you’re interested in supporting horse rescue, consider researching local or national groups tied to the ASPCA or other animal welfare organizations. Celebrating this day also encourages us to advocate for stronger laws against animal cruelty and to educate others about proper horse care. Horses have a long history intertwined with human civilization, and giving back to them by promoting rescue and rehabilitation honors that relationship. By participating in #HorseRescueDay and supporting ASPCA initiatives, we help continue Henry Bergh’s legacy of compassion and protection for animals, ensuring that horses receive the respect and kindness they deserve.
