🏠 My "Simple Reno" Has Been More Stressful Than I Expected 😞
When I started my renovation journey, I thought it would be quite straightforward.
After all, I'm not doing anything major:
✔️ Painting
✔️ Some built-in cabinets
✔️ Electrical works
✔️ No hacking at all
I honestly didn't expect so many issues to happen.
The first thing that upset me was discovering that many of my brand-new electrical sockets, which were supposed to be reused, ended up scratched and dirty after being removed for the carpentry works. These weren't old fittings, they were practically new.
Then when I went down to do a spot check, I noticed paint stains on my existing cabinets. The protective coverings that were supposed to protect the surfaces had even fallen down in some areas.
To make matters worse, my brand-new kitchen metal rack was damaged. The workers attempted to drill into it to install open-casing wiring, but the attempt failed, leaving damage behind.
What frustrated me most was that this situation might have been avoidable. There was already existing carpentry below that could potentially have been used to conceal the wiring route. If more thought had been given during the planning stage, perhaps there wouldn't have been a need to drill into the rack at all. Whose fault?
And then came the carpentry issue.
We had agreed on open shelving during discussions and in the design stage. However, when the carpentry was installed, it wasn't built according to what was agreed.
At this point, I feel more like a project manager than a homeowner. Every site visit seems to uncover a new issue that requires clarification or rectification.
The biggest lesson I've learned?
Even if your renovation is "simple", don't assume it will be smooth. Document everything, double-check every detail, and visit the site as often as possible.
I genuinely wanted this process to be exciting. Instead, it's become a test of patience. 😔

Being mentally prepared for glitches, delays, and to act as a mediator between contractors can transform a stressful journey into a manageable and ultimately rewarding process.
