Celebrating my daughter Devyani’s 11th birthday has really made me reflect on what this age means, not just for her, but for us as a family. It feels like just yesterday she was a tiny baby, and now she’s stepping into her pre-teen years, full of spunk and determination. They’re still very much children, but you start seeing glimpses of the adults they’ll become. Devyani, with her fiery spirit, is definitely finding her voice and her independence. It’s a delicate dance as a parent – you want to encourage their autonomy, but also provide that steady anchor they still need. I've found it’s a time for more conversations, really listening to their thoughts (even when they seem wild!), and trying to understand their perspective. They're navigating new friendships, school challenges, and figuring out where they fit in. One of the biggest things I've learned is that celebrating their birthday at this age isn't just about presents; it's about acknowledging their growth and the person they are evolving into. For Devyani's 11th, we focused on experiences she loves. Maybe it's a special outing, a small gathering with close friends, or even just a day dedicated to her favorite activities. The key is to make them feel seen and cherished for who they are right now. I often ask her what her favorite memory from the past year is, or what she’s most excited about for the next one. This is a wonderful opportunity to support their passions, whether it's a sport, art, reading, or something totally unique. For me, seeing Devyani pursue things she loves, even if they’re different from what I expected, is incredibly rewarding. It reinforces her individuality and confidence. Parenting an 11-year-old can be a whirlwind of emotions – sometimes challenging, often hilarious, and always full of love. It’s about building a foundation of trust and understanding that will carry them through their teenage years.
