... Read moreAs a Proud Boricua teacher, my classrooms are vibrant spaces where Puerto Rican culture is front and center. I engage my students in learning about our island's history, traditions, and the contributions of Puerto Ricans to art, science, and various fields. Teaching about Puerto Rico goes beyond simply discussing its geographical aspects; it's about weaving the rich tapestry of its culture into everyday lessons. To make history relatable, I often incorporate stories of Puerto Rican heroes, from historical figures like José de Diego to contemporary icons such as Bad Bunny, whose music resonates with young audiences. I utilize multimedia presentations, films, and literature to bring Puerto Rican narratives to life, capturing the attention of my students. Through this, they not only learn about the island's struggles and triumphs but also feel a sense of pride in their heritage. In addition to academic lessons, we celebrate traditional Puerto Rican holidays like Día de la independencia and festivals such as Las Fiestas de la Calle San Sebastián. These celebrations offer a great opportunity for students to engage with cultural practices through music, dance, and culinary arts. Students might recreate traditional recipes in class or learn to dance the salsa or bomba, connecting them with their roots in a joyful and meaningful way. Moreover, community involvement is integral to my teaching approach. Collaborating with local Puerto Rican community organizations allows my students to participate in events that highlight our culture. Engaging students in these activities not only enhances their learning experience but reinforces the importance of cultural identity and belonging. Ultimately, being a Boricua teacher in the classroom is about inspiring the next generation. I strive to cultivate a classroom atmosphere where students feel encouraged to share their own experiences, fostering inclusivity and appreciation for diversity. By teaching the beauty and significance of Puerto Rican culture, we build a foundation of respect and understanding that extends far beyond the classroom.
