Dirty Hair Does ✨Not✨Grows Faster! 🙄❌
I have 4B natural hair and we all grew up being taught that dirty hair grow faster, but that couldn’t be further from the truth. While we don’t have to wash our hair every day or every three days like our counterparts, we should be washing frequently. I tend to wash my hair every week. I try to make Sundays my wash days.
EXCESS BUILDUP is a big reason why black women should be washing frequently. Because we add so much to our hair to maintain its moisture that all of that is sitting in our hair in our scalps is doing no good in the long run. If we just pile more product onto more product, then it’s not even reaching out here beneficially.
AVOIDING WATER: Also I feel like we’ve been taught to avoid water because the way it makes our hair shrink and some of us may not like our shrinkage and to maintain the longevity of our styles, but water is moisturizer! Our hair needs water and we cannot avoid it to the expense of our healthy natural hair.
IS IT GROWING: your hair is always growing. But this myth came about because we tend to see less breakage when we don’t wash our hair frequently. But the breakage is ACTUALLY still there, you just don’t see it because you’re not actually brushing it out the way you should be. It’s just sitting in your hair or the split ends are continuing to go up the shaft.

Growing up with 4B natural hair myself, I've often encountered the age-old myth that dirty hair grows faster. Through my own journey, I've learned that this simply isn't true. Excess buildup from products can actually suffocate your scalp, preventing it from getting the nutrients it needs to foster healthy hair growth. Your scalp is skin, and just like your face or body, it needs to be cleaned regularly to stay healthy. I started making it a habit to wash my hair weekly—usually Sundays—and noticed a significant improvement. When I neglected washing, my scalp felt clogged, and my hair struggled to retain moisture despite all the products I applied. On the other hand, frequent washing removes product buildup and keeps the scalp's environment balanced, promoting stronger, healthier strands that are less prone to breakage. Water plays a vital role too! Many avoid water fearing shrinkage or disruption of styles, but water is a natural moisturizer essential for maintaining hair elasticity and health. Ignoring water can leave hair dry and brittle, increasing the risk of breakage. Importantly, hair growth is constant, but what differs is the visible condition of hair due to factors like breakage and scalp health. When hair isn’t washed regularly, breakage still occurs, but it might be hidden as hair tangles or split ends worsen without proper care. From my own experience and speaking with fellow natural hair enthusiasts, adopting a balanced hair care schedule that includes regular washing, moisturizing, and protective styles has been key. This approach has helped me embrace my natural hair’s texture and growth potential without falling for myths that could harm its health.
