Iām Engaged at 20!
Maybe a controversial topic, but letās chat about it! I just got engaged to my best friend this past Sunday!! A shock to some, but so many people flooded my phone with messages of support and congratulations. My fiancĆ© and I, Ben, were planning on getting married soon and I knew he had a ring, so this wasnāt an immediate shock when he knelt down on one knee and asked me to marry him.
One common misconception I kept hearing leading up to the engagement was ābut youāre so youngā or āyou have a whole life ahead of youā and while that is true, I donāt see how marriage can oppose that. I can still have the time of my life with the love of my life. The two can easily co-exist. Some people reference then the dating scene saying that I canāt date around but who wants to? What is the point of unintentionally being with someone? I see it as a waste of my time and theirs.
Another thing I kept hearing was ābut how do you know?ā and maybe this is a separate post, but in short, I just did. He checked off all my boxes, he was and always will be the most attractive man to me. When we have our differences, I still love him (even if I donāt like him in the moment) and I know I would choose him in a heartbeat any moment in my life and he would do the same.
I am still enjoying life and when we get married and that wonāt stop. I am beyond excited to take up a new last name and start a new journey in my life! š¤š„
It's been a whirlwind since Ben got down on one knee, and the sheer joy is still overwhelming! I totally get why some people raise an eyebrow when they hear Iām engaged at 20. Society often pushes a narrative that your early twenties are for exploring, dating, and finding yourself. And while I completely agree with finding yourself and exploring, I've found that doing it with my best friend by my side makes the journey even richer. Many have asked, 'How do you really know at such a young age?' And honestly, itās not just a feeling; itās a deep-seated certainty built over time. For me, knowing came from seeing how we navigate challenges together. Itās about having someone who genuinely celebrates your successes and lifts you up during failures. Itās knowing that even when we disagree, the respect and love remain unwavering. I remember looking at my beautiful oval diamond engagement ring for the first time, and it wasn't just a symbol of his love, but a confirmation of everything we've built. He's not just my partner; he's my biggest cheerleader and my safe harbor. The idea that being engaged or married at 20 means you're 'giving up' your youth or missing out on experiences couldn't be further from my reality. In fact, I feel like I'm gaining so much! We're growing up together, learning about life, goals, and building a foundation as a united front. This isn't about rushing; it's about intentionally choosing my future partner and enjoying my youth with him. We still plan adventures, pursue our individual passions, and support each other's dreams. Marriage, for us, is an expansion of life, not a limitation. I also believe there are unique advantages to starting this chapter earlier. We get to build our lives and careers alongside each other, shaping our future as a team from a relatively early stage. We're learning financial responsibility, home planning, and navigating adulting together, which strengthens our bond immensely. Imagine all the memories we'll create, the challenges we'll overcome, and the dreams we'll chase over a lifetime, starting now. Looking ahead, Iām so excited for the wedding planning ā perhaps opting for a charming chapel setting like the one we saw in a dream, or something more intimate. What truly matters is the commitment weāre making. For anyone out there questioning if theyāre ātoo youngā for love and commitment, my advice is to listen to your heart and trust your intuition. Every love story is unique, and there's no universal timeline. If you've found your person, and you both feel ready, then that's all that matters. This journey isn't just about 'getting married at 20'; it's about building a lifetime of love, partnership, and shared joy, starting now.
