How to count the Chinese lucky number?

2025/10/29 Edited to

... Read moreWhen I first started learning Mandarin, I was absolutely fascinated by Chinese culture, especially how numbers hold such deep meaning! It’s not just about counting; it’s about luck, prosperity, and even avoiding misfortune. Many people ask, "What number is lucky in Chinese?" and honestly, it’s a journey of discovery! Let's start with the basics – learning Mandarin numbers 1-10 is super helpful for understanding these meanings. Here’s a quick guide: One (一 - yī): Often represents unity or a good beginning. Two (二 - èr): Signifies harmony, balance, and pairs, often seen in wedding decorations. Good things come in twos! Three (三 - sān): Associated with birth and life, though its luck isn't as strong as others. Four (四 - sì): This is definitely one to be aware of! In Mandarin, 'sì' sounds very similar to 'sǐ' (死), which means death. Because of this, it's widely considered unlucky, and you'll often find buildings skipping floor numbers ending in 4. Five (五 - wǔ): Associated with the five elements (wood, fire, earth, metal, water). It’s generally neutral but can be lucky in certain contexts. Six (六 - liù): Pronounced 'liù', it sounds like 'liú' (流), meaning smooth or flowing. It's a very lucky number, especially for business, representing everything going smoothly. Seven (七 - qī): Can be a bit ambiguous. It sounds like 'qī' (起), meaning 'rise', which is positive. However, it also sounds like 'qī' (妻), meaning 'wife', and is associated with the Ghost Festival, so its luck varies. Eight (八 - bā): Ah, the superstar of Chinese lucky numbers! As the original post highlights, 'bā' sounds like 'fā' (发), which means wealth, fortune, and prosperity. This is why you see so many things linked to eight, like phone numbers, addresses, and even important dates. I remember seeing license plates with multiple eights selling for astronomical prices! The OCR even showed us how to 'Count the Lucky Number' eight by saying *bā shibā*, *bā bai bā shi bā*, *bā qiān bā bai bā shí bā*, and even bā wan bā qiān bā and bā bai bā shí wan bā qiān – essentially, 'eighty-eight', 'eight hundred eighty-eight', 'eight thousand eight hundred eighty-eight', and so on, emphasizing the power of repeating this lucky digit. 'Eight is a lucky number in China' indeed! Nine (九 - jiǔ): Sounds like 'jiǔ' (久), meaning long-lasting or eternal. This makes it a symbol of longevity and often used in weddings for eternal love. Ten (十 - shí): Represents perfection or completeness. Now, let's address some specific numbers you might be curious about. When people ask "is 68 a lucky number in Chinese?", the answer is a resounding yes! 'Liù bā' (six-eight) sounds like 'flow wealth', making it incredibly auspicious for business and personal fortune. Similarly, numbers like '1314' might be seen as an "angel number" in Western traditions, but in Chinese culture, 'yī sān yī sì' (一三一四) sounds like 'yī shēng yī shì' (一生一世), meaning 'one life, one world' or 'forever', making it romantic! What about numbers like 27, 41, 1, 22, 31, 777? 27 (二七 - èr qī): Two is good, seven is mixed. Not a primary lucky number, but not explicitly unlucky. 41 (四一 - sì yī): Four is unlucky, one can be lonely. Generally avoided due to the 'death' sound of four. 1 (一 - yī): Represents unity and beginnings, but can also imply loneliness. Not as strongly lucky as 8, 6, 9. 22 (二二 - èr èr): Good! Double harmony, double pairs, signifying good things in pairs. 31 (三一 - sān yī): Three is generally positive, one is unity. No strong negative connotations. 777 (七七七 - qī qī qī): While '777' is a symbol of luck in many Western cultures (think slot machines!), in traditional Chinese numerology, it doesn't carry the same intense 'lucky' weight as '888' or '666'. Seven is a complex number, so triple seven isn't necessarily triple luck in the same pronounced way. Understanding these nuances makes learning Mandarin so much richer. It's not just about words; it's about cultural insights that truly bring the language to life!
