Fiery Beijing Beef with Crispy Edges and Bold Flavors
Ingredients:
1 lb flank steak or sirloin, thinly sliced
2 tablespoons cornstarch
2 tablespoons vegetable oil
1 red bell pepper, sliced
1 onion, sliced
3 cloves garlic, minced
1 tablespoon ginger, minced
1/4 cup soy sauce
2 tablespoons hoisin sauce
2 tablespoons rice vinegar
2 tablespoons sugar
1 teaspoon chili paste or chili flakes (adjust to heat preference)
1 teaspoon sesame oil
2 green onions, sliced (for garnish)
Sesame seeds (optional garnish)
Directions:
Toss the beef slices with cornstarch until evenly coated. Shake off excess.
Heat vegetable oil in a large skillet or wok over medium-high heat. Add beef and cook until crispy and browned on all sides, about 4-5 minutes. Remove beef and set aside.
In the same pan, add garlic, ginger, onion, and bell pepper. Stir-fry for 3-4 minutes until vegetables are tender-crisp.
In a small bowl, whisk together soy sauce, hoisin sauce, rice vinegar, sugar, chili paste, and sesame oil.
Return the beef to the pan and pour the sauce over it. Toss everything together and cook for another 2-3 minutes until the sauce thickens and coats the beef and veggies well.
Garnish with sliced green onions and sesame seeds if desired. Serve hot over steamed rice.
Beijing Beef is a popular Chinese-American dish known for its crispy, tender beef slices coated in a rich, bold sauce. Achieving the perfect texture involves coating the beef with cornstarch before frying, which creates a crispy exterior while keeping the inside juicy. Using flank steak or sirloin thinly sliced allows the meat to cook quickly and absorb the flavorful sauce well. The sauce combines soy sauce, hoisin sauce, rice vinegar, sugar, chili paste, and sesame oil to deliver complexity with both sweet and spicy elements. For optimal flavor, it's important to balance the sweetness of sugar and hoisin sauce with the acidity of rice vinegar and the heat from chili paste or flakes, which can be adjusted based on your spice preference. Including fresh aromatics like minced garlic and ginger further enhances the dish’s savory depth. Bell peppers and onions add texture and color while maintaining a tender-crisp bite, complementing the beef perfectly. To serve, garnish the dish with sliced green onions and optional toasted sesame seeds, adding an aromatic finish and visual appeal. Pairing this stir-fry with steamed white rice helps to soak up the flavorful sauce, making it a complete and satisfying meal. This recipe is great for quick weeknight dinners and offers a homemade alternative to takeout, allowing control over heat level and ingredient quality. For variations, consider adding other vegetables such as snap peas or carrots to increase nutritional value and color. Additionally, marinating the beef briefly before cooking can infuse extra flavor. This recipe exemplifies how simple techniques and well-balanced ingredients create an authentic and delicious Beijing Beef experience at home.
