In a large bowl, whisk flour, sugar, cocoa powder, baking powder, baking soda, and salt.

Gradually add powdered sugar, one cup at a time.

Add heavy cream and vanilla extract, whipping until smooth and fluffy.

If desired, divide frosting into two bowls and tint one with a few drops of food coloring.

Fit a piping bag with a star tip and spoon in both colors side by side to create a swirl effect.

Step 3: Decorate

Pipe buttercream onto cooled cupcakes in a tall swirl.

Top with one fresh strawberry and two blackberries.

Sprinkle chocolate pearls and lightly dust cocoa powder on top.

Using high-quality unsweetened cocoa powder enhances the depth of chocolate flavor in the cupcakes, while the addition of brewed coffee or hot water intensifies the cocoa notes, resulting in a richer and more moist texture. Using buttermilk not only tenderizes the crumb but also adds a subtle tang that balances the sweetness. The berry swirl buttercream frosting introduces a fresh twist to the classic buttercream by incorporating food coloring to create a visually appealing effect alongside the vibrant natural flavor of fresh berries. Buttercream consistency can be adjusted by altering the amount of powdered sugar or cream to achieve the perfect piping texture. When decorating, incorporating fresh strawberries and blackberries not only brightens the appearance but also adds natural fruity bursts with every bite. Chocolate pearls or sprinkles contribute a satisfying crunch, complementing the smooth frosting, while a light dusting of cocoa powder adds an elegant finishing touch. For best results, ensure the cupcakes are completely cooled before frosting to prevent melting, and use room temperature ingredients to allow for proper mixing and aeration. These cupcakes are ideal for celebrations or as a delightful weekend treat, and the components can be customized by swapping berries or adjusting the buttercream flavoring to suit preferences. This recipe showcases how simple ingredients combined with careful techniques can produce bakery-quality cupcakes at home, fostering creativity in presentation and flavor profiles.
