Part 4: What It Did to Families

The crack era was not only something that happened on street corners.

It happened inside homes.

It happened in kitchens, bedrooms, hallways, apartments, shelters, grandmother’s houses, and children’s memories. It changed the way families moved, trusted, loved, argued, survived, and remembered each other.

For some children, the crack era meant growing up too fast. It meant learning when to stay quiet, when to hide money, when to watch the door, when to read an adult’s mood before speaking. It meant seeing parents disappear emotionally before they ever disappeared physically.

Some children were raised by grandparents, aunties, older siblings, neighbors, or whoever had enough strength left to step in. That part deserves respect, because a lot of families did not survive because systems saved them. They survived because somebody in the family refused to let the children fall all the way through.

But love did not erase the damage.

Addiction pulled people away from themselves. It broke trust. It caused shame. It created anger that some children carried into adulthood. It left people grieving parents who were still alive, because the person they knew was buried under the addiction.

And the painful truth is that many families were left to handle that destruction alone.

Instead of real treatment, many communities got police. Instead of healing, they got handcuffs. Instead of support for children, they got judgment. Instead of asking what families needed, the country watched the damage spread and blamed the people living through it.

That response made the wound deeper.

Because when a parent was arrested, a child still needed care. When a mother was struggling, her children still needed food, safety, and love. When a father was addicted, his absence still left a hole. When someone got clean later, the family still had to figure out what to do with all the memories from when they were not okay.

That is the part people skip.

Recovery can be real.

But so can the damage.

Both can exist in the same family.

Some people made it back. Some repaired relationships. Some stayed clean for years. Some children forgave. Some did not. Some are still trying to understand how much of their childhood was shaped by something they did not cause.

Part 4 is about what crack did to families.

Not as a headline.

As a house full of people trying to survive the same storm from different rooms.

... Read moreReflecting on the crack era’s impact reveals a complex landscape of family struggles and resilience that many rarely see or talk about. Growing up in environments shadowed by addiction, children often had to develop survival skills far beyond their years, like sensing when to stay silent or protect their loved ones. From my own experience volunteering in community programs, I witnessed grandparents and other relatives step in as pillars of strength, providing not just shelter but emotional support to children whose parents were lost to addiction. These caregivers showed incredible love and determination, even as they bore the invisible scars of trauma. However, the damage left by addiction often lingered despite these efforts. Trust was broken, emotional wounds ran deep, and many families grappled with feelings of grief over caregivers who were physically present but emotionally absent. It’s important to highlight that instead of receiving compassionate help, many communities experienced punitive measures such as policing and incarceration, which further fragmented families and deepened wounds. This emphasis on punishment rather than healing aggravated the problem, leaving children without adequate safety nets. I recall conversations with adults who lived through this era and how some still carry the anger and pain into adulthood, struggling to reconcile their childhood memories. Yet, within these stories, there is also hope. Recovery and reconciliation have occurred in some families, showing that healing is possible even where damage has been profound. Understanding this duality—that recovery and damage can coexist—is critical to supporting families today. They need tailored resources, mental health support, and community programs that acknowledge the complexity of their experiences. Sharing these personal accounts helps break the silence around addiction’s ripple effects on families. It invites empathy rather than judgment, and most importantly, it calls for systemic changes to address the root causes and provide real care and support to those affected. Recognizing the crack era not just as a headline but as a lived experience inside many homes transforms how we approach healing and community resilience moving forward.
