It’s not about being harsh, but about consistent, loving instruction that points them towards biblical truths. This is where the S.O.A.P. method, which I often use in my Bible study, comes in handy even for parenting principles. I find myself using it to break down scriptures related to child-rearing. For example, with Proverbs 22:6, I'd apply S.O.A.P. like this: S (Scripture): Proverbs 22:6. I'll read it in a few translations to get a fuller picture of the verse displayed in my open Bible. O (Observation): What does it literally say? What are the key verbs and nouns? What is the immediate context within Proverbs? I observe the tension between 'training' and potentially allowing 'their own way.' A (Application): How does this apply to my children right now? Am I consistently guiding them, or am I letting them drift? What specific habits or attitudes do I need to address? How can I teach them God's principles about respect, hard work, or kindness this week? This is where I often jot down specific ideas in my notebook, just like the handwritten notes you might see in a study journal. P (Prayer): I turn my observations and applications into prayer. I pray for wisdom, patience, and for my children's hearts to be open to God's training, not just mine. This method has helped me be more deliberate in my approach to biblical study and parental guidance, understanding that my role isn't just to provide and protect, but to proactively shape their character according to God’s word. It's a daily commitment, but seeing the small changes in their choices, guided by biblical principles, is incredibly rewarding. It really underscores the importance of foundational training early on, just as the verse implies. It's a warning, yes, but also an empowering call to action for us parents!
