Mackinac Island Itinerary

... Read moreHey fellow travelers! So many of you asked for more details after I shared my initial Mackinac Island itinerary, and I'm thrilled to dive deeper into what makes this Michigan gem so special. If you're planning a visit, trust me, it's an experience unlike any other! First off, getting there. The OCR mentioned Shepler's ferry, and that's definitely a popular choice, along with Star Line. I personally found that staying just off-island in St. Ignace or Mackinaw City and taking an early ferry over is a fantastic way to save on accommodation costs, especially if you're looking for budget-friendly options. The ferry ride itself is part of the adventure, offering stunning views of the Mackinac Bridge as you approach the island. Just remember to check their schedules, especially for the last ferry back! Once you arrive, you'll immediately notice the absence of cars – it’s such a refreshing change! My absolute favorite way to get around is by renting a bike. It gives you the freedom to explore at your own pace. There are plenty of rental shops right near the ferry docks. Biking around the island's perimeter is a must-do; the views are breathtaking. And speaking of biking, don't miss pedaling up to see the incredible Arch Rock. It’s a natural wonder that truly makes you appreciate Michigan's beauty. While biking is great, for a different perspective, I highly recommend a carriage tour. The OCR highlighted the "OFFICIAL MACKINAC ISLAND CARRIAGE TOURS," and they are fantastic for learning about the island's history and seeing sights you might otherwise miss, all from the comfort of a horse-drawn carriage. It’s a step back in time! No trip to Mackinac Island is complete without seeing the iconic Grand Hotel. Even if you're not staying there, walking through its magnificent grounds or enjoying a drink on its famous porch (which the OCR rightly calls the world's largest!) is an experience in itself. The architecture and gardens are simply stunning. Then, make sure to stroll through the bustling downtown area. The shops and restaurants offer everything from fudge to unique souvenirs. I always try to grab some fresh fudge – it’s a Mackinac tradition! For those seeking a bit more adventure, kayaking around the island, especially at sunset, is pure magic. I saw some amazing views with Great Turtle Kayak Tours, and it's a unique way to experience the tranquil waters and stunning Michigan sunsets. A few final tips: Wear comfortable walking shoes, as you'll be doing a lot of exploring. Pack layers, as the weather can change quickly. And most importantly, savor every moment on this incredible, car-free paradise. It’s truly a special escape!
