Are you studying abroad next school year? If so, I definitely recommend considering a trip to Morocco! This has definitely been one of my favorite trips during my study abroad experience. There is so much to do, and everything is so cheap and affordable! Marrakesh is such a beautiful city and it’s been so cool to experience a different culture. Here’s what I did during my first day in the city!

If you're planning your own Moroccan adventure, especially if you're a student, here are some deeper insights and tips I picked up during my incredible first day. The souks are absolutely a highlight, and navigating them is an experience in itself. Don't be afraid to get a little lost – that's often where you find the best hidden gems! When it comes to shopping, remember that bargaining isn't just accepted, it's expected. I found these gorgeous earrings (yes, the ones I mentioned!) and managed to get them for a much better price simply by engaging in friendly negotiation. It's all part of the fun! Beyond jewelry, keep an eye out for the incredible spice stalls. The vibrant colors and aromatic scents are mesmerizing, and it's a fantastic place to pick up unique souvenirs or ingredients to bring home. Just be sure to check customs regulations! Food in Marrakesh is another adventure. While getting fresh smoothies from fruit stalls is a refreshing treat, make sure to dive into the local street food scene. Keep an eye out for 'harira' (a traditional Moroccan soup), and various grilled meats or vegetable skewers sold by street vendors. Don't shy away from trying the traditional Arabic coffee; it's often prepared right in front of you with a unique ritual, making the experience as rich as the coffee itself. For dinner, traditional Moroccan food like tagine is a must-try, but explore different restaurants to find your favorite variations. I loved trying different tagines every night! Venturing beyond the markets, places like Madrasa Ben Youssef truly showcase the stunning Islamic architecture. Take your time to appreciate the intricate carvings and tilework – it’s a peaceful escape from the bustling city. When exploring such historical sites, dressing modestly is always a good idea, showing respect for the local culture. Speaking of culture, don't be afraid to interact with locals. A simple 'Salam alaikum' (peace be upon you) goes a long way. For fellow students, managing your budget is key. Public transportation like local buses can be very cheap, or you can haggle for taxi fares. Consider staying in a riad (traditional Moroccan house with an inner courtyard) for an authentic and often affordable experience. Eating at local eateries rather than tourist traps will save you a lot and give you a more genuine taste of Morocco. Lastly, always carry small denominations of currency for small purchases and tips. My first day taught me that Marrakesh offers so much for so little, making it an ideal destination for an unforgettable study abroad trip!
