🪞Met Gala 2025: Superfine: Tailoring Black Dandy!🪞
🪞Met Gala 2025: Superfine: Tailoring Black Style/Dandyism. I want to take this time to remember and honor The Late Iconic Black Dandy Andre Leon Talley. Who was one of the main inspirations for this years theme.
A huge shout out to Mrs. Anna Wintour for allowing iconic figures such as Colman Domingo, Lewis Hamilton, Pharrell Williams, LeBron James, and ASAP Rocky to cochair this years event.
This was like a love letter and recognition in fashion for The Black Community which I’m apart. Especially, the Vogue commercial cover with Law Roach and many other designers, editors, photographers, etc.
For those of you who are not sure what Black Dandyism is here is a quick explanation. In the Black Community it is historically known that Tailors were a huge part of styling for many Black Americans in the early 1900’s until now.
Many department stores would refuse to make clothes that fit Black Americans. So they would take those same clothes and have a Tailor make the clothes fit to their body structure. A lot of times certain pieces where curated to make a political statement that basically said we are a significant part of this society.
It goes deeper because other pioneers such as Dapper Dan would dress and style Hip Hop and Rap artists. This was during a time when stylists in society didn’t want to associate with Hip Hop or Rap because it was deemed “bad,” due to it challenging conventional theories.
Black Dandyism: Sophistication and Elegance in Style has evolved and grown in modern society with many others such as Jidenna, Steve Harvey, Andre 3,000, Fonzworth Bentley, Janelle Monáe, Prince, etc.
Noticeably a few individuals are missing who I would have known ate this theme up. We shall see again next year. Below, are some of my favorite looks. Everyone pretty much stayed in theme. It was chef’s kiss with the theme, honor, and the highest raised for charity of $31 Million.
Just goes to show how powerful my community’s influence and contributions are around The World. #MetGala2025BlackTailoringDandyism !# 🪞
The Met Gala 2025 provided a vibrant platform to honor the artistic legacy of Black Dandyism, a style deeply rooted in the African American community. This year's theme celebrated the sophistication characterized by tailored fashion, referencing historical figures who paved the way for modern expressions of identity and elegance. Black Dandyism not only embraces style but also serves as a political statement against socio-economic barriers. Originally, Black Americans often faced limitations from department stores and would rely on skilled tailors to create bespoke clothing that fit their unique body shapes, a practice that became a means of asserting their worth in society. Today, artists and public figures like Lewis Hamilton and Pharrell Williams carry the torch of this tradition, exemplifying the evolution of Black fashion. The event raised an impressive $31 million for charity, showcasing the strength and influence of the Black community in the fashion industry. This year's gathering was not just a style statement but a testament to the cultural richness and contributions of Black individuals globally, underlining their pivotal role in the evolution of fashion. As we reflect on this year's event, anticipation builds for future gatherings and continued recognition of Black Dandyism's impact on contemporary fashion.
