... Read moreIt's a question I think many of us silently ponder: "Why are people so mean nowadays?" Lately, I've noticed it everywhere – online, sometimes even in person. This feeling of increased negativity can be really draining, and I often find myself trying to make sense of it all. That's why I decided to turn to my trusty AI confidante, ChatGPT, for an honest conversation about it, just like you would with that one friend who always sees things a little differently. My chat with ChatGPT really affirmed some of my own thoughts and added a few new perspectives. It explained that a big part of it comes down to stress. Modern life brings so many pressures – economic anxieties, the constant hustle, and just trying to keep up. When people are under immense stress, their patience wears thin, and sometimes, that frustration can unfortunately manifest as meanness or irritability towards others. It's not an excuse, but it helps to understand the underlying personal struggles that many might be facing. Then there's the elephant in the room: social media. ChatGPT highlighted exactly what I've been feeling. The anonymity online often emboldens people to say things they'd never say face-to-face. Plus, the constant exposure to curated perfect lives or heated debates can fuel comparison, resentment, and a general sense of unease. It creates these echo chambers where negative opinions get amplified, sometimes making it seem like the whole world is angry. It's easy to forget the real human beings behind the screens when you're just typing into the void. What really resonated with me from our conversation was the idea that despite all this negativity, kindness is contagious. It's easy to get caught up in the cycle of meanness, but ChatGPT gently reminded me that choosing kindness, even in small ways, can genuinely inspire others. It's like a ripple effect. If I choose to be empathetic and understanding, even when someone is being difficult, it has the potential to shift the energy of that interaction. It’s hard, but it’s a powerful thought to hold onto. So, how do I deal with it? My strategy now is to practice a bit more empathy, try to understand where someone might be coming from (without excusing bad behavior, of course), and intentionally seek out positive interactions. Limiting my exposure to overly negative online spaces helps a lot too. And sometimes, like in this instance, just talking it out with an AI like ChatGPT, which offers a neutral and insightful perspective on human behavior, can be incredibly therapeutic. It helps me process my feelings and reminds me that while meanness exists, so does an abundance of good, and we all have a part in spreading it.
