Most high performers don’t mind working hard. 🌷

They don’t mind helping. 🪻

They don’t mind stepping in when something needs to get done.

The challenge is that extra effort has a way of becoming expected.

What starts as helping out once can slowly become part of your daily responsibilities. Before long, you’re carrying work that was never originally yours, and nobody remembers when it was added.

Being a high performer is a strength.

Just make sure the opportunities are growing alongside the expectations.

... Read moreFrom my own experience as a high performer at work, I've noticed a subtle but impactful pattern: the more you step up to help out or finish tasks quickly, the more extra work quietly accumulates. Initially, I didn't mind taking on additional projects or assisting coworkers because it felt rewarding and aligned with my core values. However, over time, these extra duties began to feel like the new norm rather than exceptions. It's essential to recognize that while taking initiative is a strength, it can unintentionally lead to burnout if the increased workload is not balanced by appropriate recognition or opportunities for growth. I've learned that setting clear boundaries and having candid discussions with managers about workload and career progression are vital. This ensures that any additional responsibilities come with corresponding advancement, such as promotions, raises, or skill development opportunities. Another key insight is the importance of tracking when extra work is added. Creating a written record helped me articulate how my role had expanded beyond the original job description. This documentation proved invaluable during performance reviews and negotiations for new roles. Lastly, cultivating a supportive workplace culture where high performers are valued not just for their output but for continuous development has made a significant difference. Organizations that align expectations with growth incentives foster more sustainable high performance and prevent the risks of becoming just the 'backup plan' for overflowing workloads.
