... Read moreIn my experience working with high-performing teams, one common issue is that their competence often becomes a double-edged sword. When employees consistently deliver excellent results, managers tend to assign them an increasing workload, assuming their capacity is unlimited. This pattern can transform what once was motivation and pride in their work into a heavy burden. Over time, the expectations escalate, feedback from these employees may be dismissed as mere attitude problems, and their natural boundaries start being seen as inconveniences rather than necessary limits. From what I’ve observed, burnout among high performers isn’t simply about working hard; it often stems from being overused and undervalued. Reliable individuals, who once thrived on challenges and growth, begin to feel like unpaid labor, which diminishes their engagement and leads to exhaustion. This situation is compounded when leadership fails to recognize these dynamics and does not foster a supportive workplace culture that respects personal limits and mental health. I found that organizations can mitigate this by prioritizing clear communication and boundary-setting, encouraging leaders to actively support their teams without overloading them. Moreover, recognizing the signs early and treating feedback with respect rather than suspicion can improve morale and retention. High performers do not stop caring because they lack stamina; they stop when their effort becomes the expectation rather than the exception. Supporting their well-being creates a healthier work environment where performance and sustainability coexist.
