Stop Typing these five things into ChatGPT at work
Five things I can create real professional risk and they’re easier to avoid than you think. #ailiteracy #ailearning #ai
Having worked extensively with AI tools like ChatGPT, I can personally attest to the importance of knowing what not to share. Many users unknowingly risk sensitive data exposure, which can lead to serious legal and professional consequences. For example, typing in client names or personal data—even seemingly harmless details—could violate NDAs or data protection laws like GDPR. Financial information such as revenue figures, salary details, or internal projections also must be kept off AI platforms that do not guarantee confidentiality. I've seen colleagues accidentally leak such info by trying to get AI assistance with financial modeling or summaries. Proprietary product information—including features, roadmaps, or secret formulas—represents a company’s competitive advantage. Sharing these details on AI platforms can compromise this advantage, as AI-generated responses may be stored or accessed externally. Passwords, login credentials, or any security-related information should never be entered into chatbots, because they are not secure environments and can be targeted by cyber threats. Always use secure channels for handling sensitive credentials. Lastly, discussing confidential topics during meetings where AI tools are involved or when sharing sensitive strategic thoughts in written prompts can introduce unexpected risks. A simple rule of thumb I've adopted is: if the information lives behind security or creates competitive advantage, keep it offline from AI tools. Smart AI usage is about enhancing productivity without creating new vulnerabilities. Using AI for brainstorming or strategy is valuable, but avoid turning your chatbot into a repository for sensitive data. Being mindful of these dangers has helped me maintain trust and safeguard career value while still benefiting from AI’s power.
