Rock Garden Makeover! 💚
We built this rock garden over eight years ago, and creeping buttercups and daylilies took it over. We got it cleaned up and added three agapanthus from Sunset Plant Collection, Ever Amethyst, Ever White, and Ever Sapphire. These gorgeous plants are drought-tolerant once established, and are also pest- and disease-resistant.
These fantastic plants will bloom from spring through summer with a longer duration than traditional agapanthus, welcoming bees, butterflies, and hummingbirds! Their multiple spikes of deep purple, violet-blue, and vibrant white flowers make lovely cut flowers as well! We grow agapanthus in containers, in-ground, and in a raised bed.

Having tended to a rock garden over several years, I can attest to the challenge of keeping unwanted plants like creeping buttercups at bay. The decision to refresh the garden by introducing agapanthus varieties—Ever Amethyst, Ever White, and Ever Sapphire—proved transformative. These plants are not only visually striking but also remarkably resilient once established, thriving even with minimal watering. A key insight I discovered is that agapanthus plants flourish in well-drained soil, and their drought tolerance really becomes apparent after the first growing season. Positioning them to receive full sun encourages strong flowering spikes, which can last from early spring into late summer, providing an extended period of color and life to the garden. Moreover, incorporating these plants in a mix of containers, raised beds, and ground plots allows for flexible design options and accessibility while minimizing maintenance. The rich purple and white flowers attract a variety of pollinators such as bees, butterflies, and hummingbirds, enhancing the ecosystem around your garden. For anyone considering a similar makeover, removing invasive species first is critical to give new plants space to grow. Then, selecting robust, disease-resistant types like those from the Sunset Plant Collection helps ensure successful blooms year after year. Plus, agapanthus makes excellent cut flowers, adding beauty indoors as well. Overall, investing time in carefully planning and nurturing your rock garden makeover pays off with a sustainable, low-maintenance, and visually elegant outdoor space that supports local wildlife and delivers long-lasting enjoyment.
