Okay, so if you're like me, you probably think unicorns are all about magic, glitter, and rainbows, right? Well, let me tell you, after diving into 'Unicorns Are The Worst,' my whole perspective got a hilarious shake-up! This book, which we just had a Halloween read-aloud of, is a total gem, especially if you're looking for something out of the ordinary for your kids' activity time. The story is told from the point of view of a very grumpy, very hard-working goblin. And oh, does this goblin have strong opinions on unicorns! He spends his days on important goblin business – documenting spells, gathering ingredients, even mastering the art of turning broccoli into ice cream or transforming socks into slugs. Serious stuff, right? Then, these unicorns move in next door. Suddenly, his peaceful, focused life is filled with, well, *unicorns*. Our goblin neighbor can't stand their constant frolicking. He complains about their dainty hooves, their endless tea parties, and the incessant harp music. Honestly, I chuckled at his exasperation. He's trying to get important work done, while they're just, you know, being unicorns – sparkly and seemingly carefree. He even laments how hard it is to get all that unicorn glitter out of his smock! It's a fantastic way to explore different personalities and what irritates us about others. My kids were giggling at the goblin's rants, and it really opened up a conversation about how we perceive people who are different from us. But here’s where the story gets really good, and it’s why I think it’s such a brilliant read-aloud. Just when the goblin has convinced himself that unicorns truly are the worst, a big, scary dragon shows up! And guess what? Those "annoying" unicorn traits suddenly become incredibly useful. Their glitter can put out dragon fire, their harp music can be disorienting, and those dainty hooves? They pack quite a wallop! It’s a wonderful twist that teaches us to look beyond first impressions and appreciate the unique strengths everyone brings. This book is more than just a funny story; it's a fantastic conversation starter. After we finished reading, we had a blast talking about: Changing Perspectives: What did the goblin learn about the unicorns? Have you ever thought someone was "the worst" until you got to know them better? Unique Talents: What are some things you're good at that might seem silly to others, but could actually be really helpful? Mythical Creatures Fun: If you had to pick a mythical creature to be your neighbor, who would it be and why? (And who would you absolutely NOT want next door, like our goblin with his unicorns?) For a fun Halloween kids' activity, you could even try to recreate some of the goblin's "spells" (with adult supervision, of course!). Maybe try making a "broccoli into ice cream" smoothie, or draw your own version of a goblin and his unicorn neighbors. You could even invent your own goblin-approved "anti-glitter" craft! This book is a brilliant way to sneak in some valuable lessons about empathy and acceptance, all wrapped up in a wonderfully quirky Halloween package. It’s definitely earned its spot as a family favorite for our spooky season story times!
