51st Mini Book Review of 2025

Following up on my initial #MiniBookReview, I wanted to take a deeper dive into Richie Billing's 'Together We Rise.' This book has been on my radar, and as a self-proclaimed grimdark urban fantasy enthusiast, I was eager to see how it would tackle themes of rebellion and corruption. What truly caught my eye from the snippets I'd seen was the promise of a truly action-packed narrative, something I always look for when I'm diving into a new fantasy world. And let me tell you, it certainly delivered on some of that grit and intensity I crave. The 'political grimdark urban fantasy' label is incredibly fitting for 'Together We Rise.' Billing throws us headfirst into the decaying city of Pietalos, where the air practically crackles with the populace's growing unrest against a deeply entrenched and corrupt government. The narrative structure, featuring multiple character perspectives, was a standout. I loved how each chapter introduced a different character, yet their individual struggles and motivations seamlessly intertwined, pushing the revolution forward. It wasn't just a sudden uprising; it felt organic, sparked by a tragic incident in a factory that slowly but surely galvanized the people. This slow burn, building momentum towards a full-blown revolt, really showcased the collective resilience of the city's inhabitants. Seeing how all the pieces – from street-level activists to more clandestine figures – came together to challenge the overwhelming corruption was truly magnificent to witness. It reminded me that even in the darkest of times, hope can ignite from unexpected places. If you're looking for a book 'packed with action,' you won't be disappointed. Billing doesn't shy away from intense sequences, and the pacing keeps you hooked. One of the most intriguing aspects for me was the mysterious 'Shadow looking over them all.' It was a fantastic element of surprise that I genuinely didn't see coming, adding a layer of suspense and a larger, unseen threat. This mystery, combined with the unfolding revolution, made for a compelling read. The way various character arcs converged and influenced the larger political landscape of Pietalos was skillfully handled, making me feel invested in their personal stakes as much as the fate of their city. Now, for the parts that gave me pause. The OCR warnings were quite accurate: 'severe swearing' and 'graphic descriptions' are prevalent throughout. While I understand that grimdark often embraces a raw, unfiltered style, I personally found some of the language to be a bit excessive and, at times, didn't feel it added significantly to the narrative's impact. More critically for me was the 'lack of world building.' As a fantasy reader, I thrive on intricate settings and a strong sense of place. For a significant portion of the book, it felt like the story could have taken place in any generic, downtrodden city. The mentions of 'kingdoms' only started to surface later, leaving me wishing for a more robust foundation of the fantasy world from the outset. This limited my immersion, as I struggled to visualize the unique aspects of Pietalos beyond its immediate political turmoil. So, is 'Together We Rise' for you? If you crave a gritty, character-driven political thriller with a strong focus on revolution and don't mind a liberal dose of explicit language and violence, then absolutely give Richie Billing's work a try. You'll likely appreciate the intricate plotting and the compelling depiction of human resilience in the face of tyranny. However, if you prefer your fantasy worlds richly detailed from the get-go, or if you're sensitive to extensive coarse language, you might find yourself navigating some challenging waters. It's definitely a book that sparks discussion!
