wisdom tooth surgery rant 🦷

‼️TW: SURGERY, read at your own discretion!‼️

heyy 🫣 been a while, hope life has been treating y'all well!

with that out of the way, it's been about 2 months since i've had wisdom tooth surgery and i wanted to talk about my experience with it! because HOLYY SMOKES things really didn't go the way i expected things to go? this is gonna be a long one, so grab a cup of your favorite drink and enjoy the ride ☕️

🦷 procedure: i got all 4 of my wisdom teeth taken out on the same day. they were all impacted and causing crowding, so i really didn't have any alternatives 😔 the nurses told me that i wasn't going to remember the day because i was under general anesthesia, but i actually remember the whole day and more 😭 i even woke up during surgery (i didn't feel any pain, THANK GOD, but i could very obviously notice that the surgeon was all in my mouth). though honestly the wildest part was the fact they had to test my blood pressure like 10 times because their machine wasn't working properly 😀 when i tell you i mentally shat myself like 20 times before the actual procedure.... i also remember an assistant asking "is this IV supposed to have bubbles in it?" (which if you don't know, having bubbles in it can be lethal 💀). dawg i thought it was over for me... but y'know what, i lived, and i'm very glad that i did but i was genuinely scared for a moment 😭 i was also surprisingly coherent after surgery? like, i remember the car ride home attempting to rant about everything that happened beforehand to my mom, but i still sounded incoherent because i still had the cotton shoved in my mouth 💀

🦷 pain: like a 7/10 immediately after surgery, usually like a 5 during the first week. honestly? i've had period cramps worse than the pain i've felt throughout the first week. although, i did wake up in the middle of the night MULTIPLE TIMES because the pain meds wore off 😭 but beyond that, the best way i could describe it was just "uncomfortable". again, i've dealt with worse pain, but that doesn't mean that i still want to deal with that pain, y'know? my warmie plushie has been a miracle throughout the whole time though!! if i could recommend anything i'd recommend getting something for hot compression!! that was a life saver fr 🥹

🦷 swelling: swelling was surprisingly minimal?? i tried the tiktok tip of drinking pineapple juice before surgery (i had like a cup a day for like 3 weeks) and i think it worked!! one side was more swollen than the other and it kinda looked like i just shoved a marshmallow in my mouth or something 😭 but even then it was basically gone by the 4th day! i was actually surprised over how normal i looked?

🦷 recovery: honestly, the first week was the worst, but after that life goes back to normal 🥲 it took a few weeks for the gums to heal, and for a while there was a "pit" where the teeth used to be? a lot of food got stuck in it to the point it was uncomfortable and i had to flush my mouth out every time i ate 😭 but once that healed up, i've been able to eat normally again! the bone itself takes up to a year to heal, so i'm not 100% recovered, even right now.

BUT that's about it! hopefully this could be a decent guide on what to expect while going through this procedure to those who haven't gone through it yet. :') honestly, it was alright, and reflecting on it a while later kinda helped me process everything? though don't worry about waking up during surgery, it's a less than 0.5% chance of happening and i knew that i was more prone to waking up because of my genetics 😭 my experience certainly won't be yours!! you could also still be loopy after surgery and forget about everything that happened like what's normally supposed to happen! though everything turned out alright and that's what matters 🫶 if you read this entire rant i love you and fear you at the same time, but thank you and i hope you have a great day!!

... Read moreHey everyone! Following up on my wild wisdom tooth journey, I wanted to dive deeper into some common questions I had—and maybe you do too! Let's talk about what really happens after the surgery, beyond just my personal surprises. What About That Jawline & Face Shape 'Before & After'? One thing I saw everyone talking about online was how their face would change or if their jawline would suddenly become more defined. Honestly, for me, it was mostly temporary swelling! You might look a bit like a chipmunk for a few days, especially on the side where teeth were more impacted, but don't expect a dramatic new jawline. My face went back to normal pretty quickly once the swelling subsided. The real 'before and after' is mostly about comfort and finally getting rid of that nagging tooth pain, not a total facial reconstruction! Tackling the Swelling: Beyond Pineapple Juice! My pineapple juice trick worked great for minimal swelling, but here are a few more things that really helped and are crucial for managing that signature 'swollen face after tooth extraction.' First, ice packs are your absolute best friend for the first 24-48 hours. Keep them on for 20 minutes, then off for 20, to reduce inflammation. Also, sleeping with your head slightly elevated (extra pillows work wonders!) helps a lot with fluid drainage and can prevent morning puffiness. And, this is a big one: stick to soft foods only! Chewing can irritate the surgical sites and unfortunately increase swelling. Most noticeable swelling peaks around day 2-3 and should significantly reduce by day 5-7. It’s a process, but totally manageable with these steps! Day-by-Day Recovery: What I Wish I Knew (and Pain Management!) The first few days are definitely the toughest, especially when those pain meds wear off! Day 1: Expect some bleeding and needing to change gauze frequently. It's vital to stay ahead of the pain – take your prescribed medications before the pain gets unbearable. Rest, rest, rest is key; avoid any strenuous activity. Days 2-3: Swelling will likely be at its peak, and you might still feel quite groggy. Stick to smoothies, mashed potatoes, lukewarm soups, and yogurts. Absolutely avoid straws! The suction can dislodge the blood clot and lead to a painful dry socket. Days 4-7: You'll start feeling much better, and swelling should be steadily going down. This is when I started doing gentle warm salt water rinses (a teaspoon of salt in a cup of warm water) after every meal and before bed – this was a lifesaver for cleaning out those 'pits' where food got stuck without irritating the healing gums. Just make sure not to swish too vigorously. Weeks 2-3 and Beyond: Most acute symptoms should be gone, and you can slowly introduce more solid foods back into your diet. However, remember that the deeper bone healing takes much longer, up to a year, so continue to be gentle with your mouth and follow any post-op instructions from your dentist. The Funny Side? (Or Just the Reality Check!) While my personal experience had its scary moments (like questioning those IV bubbles on the *medical monitor*!), there's also a universally relatable 'post-wisdom teeth' daze that often turns into funny stories or even memes later. That cotton in the mouth, the slurred speech, the sheer relief when you can finally eat something solid again! It’s okay to laugh about it once you’re on the other side. My post-op mumblings were definitely comedy gold for my mom, even if I was trying to rant about my ordeal! Remember, everyone's experience is unique, but knowing what to generally expect can make a huge difference in managing your own recovery. Hang in there!
