Ischemia, characterized by insufficient blood perfusion to tissues, can lead to cellular hypoxia and necrosis if untreated. Atherosclerosis, a common underlying cause of ischemia, involves plaque buildup within arterial walls, narrowing vessels and impeding blood flow. Key risk factors include age, smoking, hypertension, hyperlipidemia, obesity, diabetes, genetic predisposition, and inflammation.
