- most sales jobs are commission only, and most regular jobs are hourly or salary only. As a leasing agent you get the great cushion of an hourly pay for a 35-40+ hour week, while also opportunity for commission in each move in and renewal! So EVEN in slow months you will still get a steady income 💸✨
3. Vendor gifts.
- every once in a while vendors will come and gift you things to advertise and promote in your move in packets, which you can decide whether or not you want to! But it’s always nice accepting gifts 🎁! This can range from snacks, to merchandise, gift cards and more!!

When someone asks "what does a leasing consultant do?", I tell them we're essentially the face of the community – part salesperson, part customer service expert, and part community builder. My days are rarely boring! I spend a lot of time giving prospective residents apartment tours, showcasing different floor plans, and highlighting all the wonderful amenities. It’s about more than just opening doors; it's about understanding what someone is looking for in a home and showing them how our community fits their needs. I love meeting new people and helping them envision their life here.
Beyond tours, a big part of the job involves following up with leads, processing applications, and making sure all the paperwork for move-ins and renewals is smooth. It requires a lot of organization and attention to detail. We also handle resident inquiries, from maintenance requests to general questions, ensuring everyone has a positive living experience. It can be fast-paced, especially during peak seasons, but that keeps things exciting!
Now, about "what do you feel is the most important skill that a leasing consultant should possess?" I'd say empathy and fantastic communication skills are key. You need to be able to listen to people, understand their needs and concerns, and communicate clearly, whether you're selling an apartment or resolving an issue. Being a good problem-solver and having a genuinely positive attitude also goes a long way. After all, you're helping people find their home! Sales skills are definitely a plus, but it's more about building rapport and trust than hard selling.
Is being a leasing agent a good job? Absolutely! For me, it's been incredibly rewarding. Not only do you get those tangible perks of being a leasing consultant like the financial stability of hourly pay with commission potential, and those fun vendor gifts (sometimes even a little luxury like Prada-themed goodies, though that's rare, haha!), but you also gain invaluable skills in sales, marketing, customer service, and even basic property management. It’s a career path with plenty of room for growth, whether you want to move into property management, regional roles, or even sales and marketing outside of real estate. If you're looking for an engaging role where you get to help people and have a dynamic work environment, I highly recommend exploring leasing consultant jobs. It's a fantastic way to develop your professional self while enjoying some pretty sweet benefits!
