A Place That Feels Like Memory and Music

Counterpoint Records & Books felt like stepping into a softer, slower version of LA—one where time folds into itself between stacks of books and rows of old records. I hadn’t planned to stay long, but something about the quiet creak of the wooden floors, the soft hum of jazz playing overhead, and the way the shelves felt lived-in pulled me in and made it hard to leave.

I wandered aimlessly at first, drawn by instinct more than anything else. Their fiction section is extensive, but it was the worn poetry anthologies that held me the longest. I found a Mary Oliver collection with someone else’s underlines inside—like a stranger had left breadcrumbs for me to follow. It’s funny how books can connect you to people you’ve never met.

Then there were the records. So many of them. Flipping through the vinyl felt like flipping through time, and when I spotted a vintage Nina Simone album tucked between jazz greats, I took it as a sign to stay just a little longer.

Places like this don’t try too hard to be special—they just are. And that’s why I’ll be back.

... Read moreCounterpoint Records & Books is not just a store; it's an experience where literature and music intersect beautifully. Located in the heart of Hollywood, this quaint shop invites visitors to lose themselves among the aisles of poetry and the soft sounds of jazz. The ambiance resonates with nostalgia, as the creaky wooden floors echo tales of a bygone era. As you browse through the extensive fiction section, you may stumble upon hidden treasures like worn poetry anthologies that speak to the soul. Each book and record carries a story, often leading to unexpected connections with previous readers or listeners. The vinyl collection is particularly noteworthy. Flipping through the racks is akin to a journey through musical history, with classics and obscurities that appeal to both casual fans and serious collectors. Finding a vintage Nina Simone album amidst the jazz greats offers a reminder of the timelessness of music, making it hard to leave empty-handed. This unique blend of literature and music makes Counterpoint a sanctuary for creatives, thinkers, and lovers of art. Whether you're a local or a visitor to LA, make time for this hidden gem. Places like Counterpoint Records & Books serve as reminders that the best experiences are often the simplest—where the atmosphere fosters creativity and reflection. Venture in for a moment of solace, and you may just walk away with a new favorite read or record.
