When You Realize You’re Just an Option

I started seeing someone recently, and at first, everything felt really promising. There was a thoughtful gift, deep conversations, and a level of emotional openness that made me feel like a real connection was forming. Then, out of nowhere, the energy shifted. Replies became distant, slower, colder.

When I finally asked what was going on, they were honest: they’d been going on a few other dates that “exceeded expectations” and needed time to figure out what they wanted. They made it clear it wasn’t a competition—but hearing that still made me feel like I was just one option in a lineup.

I value emotional intimacy, but staying vulnerable without any sense of direction is hard for me. At some point, I need clarity and intention. Being emotionally close with multiple people at the same time feels like a situation where someone is bound to get hurt.

After sitting with it, I chose to walk away. Not out of anger, but out of self-respect. I want to be with someone who’s ready to prioritize the connection we’re building, not keep me on standby. I communicated that honestly, and it was understood—even if it still hurt.
