Waffle Stitch Blanket Eating My Yarn

I started a waffle stitch blanket with this soft wool yarn and it’s honestly devouring my skeins. I’m already on my third 150g skein and the blanket is still tiny (see photo).

I’m seriously considering frogging the whole thing and starting fresh. Moss stitch is calling my name because it seems much more yarn-friendly, but I’d love to hear your opinions. Have you switched patterns mid-project because your yarn wasn’t stretching far enough? Would you stick it out or start over?

... Read moreStarting a waffle stitch blanket can be an exciting project, but as many crafters have found, this particular stitch pattern tends to consume yarn at a faster rate than other stitches. The waffle stitch’s texture, which creates a thick, raised grid, demands more yarn to build those layers, making it challenging when working with limited skeins. When you notice you're already on your third 150g skein and the blanket remains quite small, it’s understandable to reconsider your approach. Many crocheters face similar dilemmas and choose between persisting with the current pattern or frogging their work to switch to a more yarn-efficient stitch. Moss stitch, also known as linen or granite stitch, is a great alternative if you want a stitch pattern that conserves yarn while still offering an attractive textured appearance. It uses single crochet and chain stitches to create a dense yet flexible fabric, helping you stretch your yarn further without sacrificing the blanket’s look or durability. Before deciding to frog your project, consider these tips: 1. Gauge Adjustment: Try hooking down a size or two smaller to control yarn consumption. 2. Size Modification: Reduce the total number of stitches or rows to fit available yarn. 3. Mixing Stitches: Combine waffle stitch sections with moss stitch panels to minimize yarn use while keeping the original texture. 4. Yarn Weight: If your yarn is particularly soft but thin, switching to a thicker yarn could provide better coverage per skein. Many crocheters have switched patterns mid-project when their yarn wasn’t stretching far enough and found it ultimately rewarding. The decision to stick it out or start fresh depends on how attached you are to the current work and the importance of the final size and texture. For anyone embarking on blanket projects, it’s always beneficial to consult pattern details regarding estimated yarn requirements and swatch gauges to avoid surprises. Sharing your progress and challenges on crafting forums or platforms like Lemon8 can also yield valuable advice from fellow yarn enthusiasts who have navigated similar issues.
