... Read morePetting a dog in public can be a delightful experience but it's essential to approach it with respect and caution. Always remember to ask the dog owner for permission first. This not only respects the owner’s boundaries but also ensures the dog's comfort. Some dogs may be shy or anxious around strangers, and an unsolicited pet could lead to an unexpected reaction. Before you pet a stranger's dog, gauge the dog’s body language. Approaching calmly and allowing the dog to come to you can make the interaction smoother. If the owner agrees, extend your hand slowly for the dog to sniff before petting, as this helps the dog feel safe. If the owner declines, respect their wishes and move on. It’s better to walk away than to risk an uncomfortable situation. It's also important to consider reasons why some people might hesitate to let others pet their dogs. Previous negative experiences, health concerns, or simply protecting an anxious dog can all play a part. Engaging in dialogue about dog etiquette enriches our community and promotes a culture of respect for all pets. Consider sharing your views and stories about interactions with dogs in public below!

No no no no no!!! Always ask before petting a dog! I do rescue I have stranger danger dogs they are great after proper introductions but they don't like being touched by strangers.

Hell no. My dog isn’t a pet, he’s a self fully trained Service dog! Even when geared some people still sneak pet when the patches on his vest CLEARLY state that distracting him is illegal!!
