... Read moreMany college students tend to overpack, bringing more clothes, shoes, and kitchen appliances than they actually use during their time on campus. Drawing from real stories, common overpacked items include bulky sweatshirts, excessive shoes, and décor that quickly loses appeal. Kitchen appliances such as stoves and coffee makers are often unnecessary, especially when dining halls and shared kitchens are available. Instead, students recommend limiting clothing to a few comfortable and versatile outfits—typically 4-5 casual outfits, 2-3 going-out outfits, several pairs of jeans or shorts, and limited sweatshirts. Shoes should be limited to essentials like daily wear, slippers, and shower shoes since space is limited. Decor can be another overpacked category, as many students find that initial decorations do not fit their style after a few weeks, leading to clutter. It’s better to bring minimal decor and personalize over time. Similarly, bulky electronics such as TVs may go unused since students often socialize in friends’ dorms or use common areas. Packing efficiently not only saves valuable closet space but also reduces moving burden and stress. Prioritize multi-use and space-saving items, consider what is truly necessary, and plan to buy or borrow less essential items later if needed. Carrying only essential appliances such as a microwave and a Pyrex bowl can suffice in dorms with shared kitchens. By understanding these insights, incoming college students can avoid the common pitfalls of overpacking and create a more comfortable, organized, and manageable living space during their college years.
