What are the bulk or value-size items to buy?

For singles/small families, there's the question of bulk buying. Do you calculate unit size prices when you make grocery runs for your family? In particular some food you can't buy in larger sizes since it's hard to use them in time, like produce or dairy or RTE things that don't freeze well.

What items are worth buying in larger sizes / bulk as a single person or small families?

Any tips/tricks for rotating your pantry to make sure you're not letting food go to waste?

... Read moreBulk buying can feel like a superpower for saving money, but if you're a single person or part of a small family, it can also feel like a trap! Who needs 50 rolls of toilet paper or a gallon of milk that expires before you can drink half of it? I've been there, staring at those massive 'value packs' wondering if it’s truly a deal or just a recipe for food waste. But over time, I've figured out some smart strategies to make bulk buying work for smaller households without letting things go stale. First, let's talk about the definite 'yes' items. Non-perishable pantry staples are your best friends. Think dried pasta, rice, canned goods (like beans, tomatoes, or tuna), spices, and baking essentials. These items have a long shelf life and you'll always use them. Buying a larger bag of rice or a case of canned tomatoes when they’re on sale at places like Costco can lead to significant savings over time. I've found great success with these, and they form the backbone of many meals. Next up are freezable items. Meat, poultry, frozen fruits and vegetables, and even bread can be excellent bulk buys. The trick here is portioning. When I buy a larger pack of chicken breasts, I immediately divide them into meal-sized portions, vacuum seal them (if I’m feeling fancy) or just use freezer bags, and then label them with the date. That way, I only thaw what I need. For instance, with a big block of tofu, I'll often press it, cut it into smaller portions, and freeze what I don't use within a few days. It thaws perfectly for stir-fries or scrambles! Household supplies are another no-brainer. Toilet paper, paper towels, cleaning products, laundry detergent, and toiletries (shampoo, soap, toothpaste) don't spoil. Buying these in larger quantities means fewer trips to the store and often a much better unit price. Just make sure you have storage space! Now, for the 'proceed with caution' items. Fresh produce, dairy, and bakery items with short shelf lives are generally not great for bulk buying for one or two people. Unless you have a specific plan to use them up quickly, or you’re planning to prep and freeze them immediately (like blanching and freezing vegetables, or baking with overripe fruit), you might end up throwing money away. I once bought a huge carton of 24 eggs at Costco, thinking it was a great deal, but then I had to get creative with breakfast, lunch, and dinner to get through them before they expired! It taught me to be more mindful of my actual consumption rate. My top tip for managing bulk purchases is a system for rotation and inventory. Use airtight containers for dry goods to keep them fresh and bug-free. Keep a running list of what’s in your freezer or pantry, so you don’t forget what you have. When you bring new items home, put them behind older items (First In, First Out). This simple trick has saved me so much food from going to waste. Ultimately, bulk buying for singles and small families is about smart planning and knowing your habits. It's not about buying everything in the biggest size, but strategically choosing items that truly offer value without leading to waste. It’s a fantastic way to stretch your budget and simplify your shopping routine!
