What grinds my gears is when I grind my gears when anxious
When anxiety shows up in your body, it often feels like knots and tightness. These are my go to strategies help lessen that tension.
When anxiety ramps up, it often feels like my body itself is 'grinding its gears' – a frustrating mix of physical tension and discomfort. I used to just tough it out, but I've learned that directly addressing these somatic symptoms makes a huge difference. If you've ever felt that unbearable jaw tension, like you're clenching all day, try gently massaging your jaw muscles in circular motions. I also find taking a moment to intentionally drop my jaw and relax my tongue against the roof of my mouth really helps release that built-up stress. For that tight throat and chest feeling, almost like a band around you, deep diaphragmatic breathing has been my lifesaver. Inhaling slowly through my nose, feeling my belly rise, and then exhaling even slower through my mouth, really calms my nervous system. Sometimes, a gentle chest stretch, like clasping my hands behind my back and opening my chest, brings immediate relief. And those 'butterflies in the stomach'? They can be so distracting. When I feel them fluttering, I try to engage my senses. A grounding technique like focusing on five things I can see, four I can touch, three I can hear, two I can smell, and one I can taste, helps pull me out of my head and back into my body. Progressive muscle relaxation (PMR) is another fantastic tool; it involves tensing and then relaxing different muscle groups throughout your body. I usually start from my toes and work my way up, holding each tension for a few seconds before releasing it completely. The contrast helps me truly feel the relaxation. These aren't quick fixes, but consistently incorporating them into my routine has made a world of difference in managing my anxiety's physical toll. It’s all about tuning into your body and giving it what it needs!
