My Birth plan Vs What actually happened😭

Giving birth and labor is not what I expected and as a first time mom no one prepared me for labor. I had made this outline of what I wanted my labor experience to look like and sometimes things don’t always go as planned. First off I was having false labor the night before and that lasted for a total of 8 hours after that I was in labor for an hour and decided to call the hospital since my water partially broke. Once I arrived at the hospital I was admitted into labor and delivery where I really wanted a room with a tub to relax myself but unfortunately all the rooms were taken up and I had a room where the shower was leaking water🫠. First midwife who checked me said I was 2cm dilated and that my water had “broken” come to find out with the second midwife to arrive that my water was actually partially broken and she had to actually break the rest. With the first midwife she had checked me 3-4 hours later to see if I was continuing to dilate and I wasn’t and had to go on Pitocin which I told her I really didn’t want to do. Thankfully my body cooperated with the Pitocin and by the time the second midwife checked me after breaking my water I went from a 2cm to a 9cm in about 5 hours. Unfortunately my labor was about 22 hours long due to my water not breaking fully by the time i arrived at the hospital and due to the first midwife telling me my water was fully broken. I did labor on my back and did end up getting the epidural. Thank god for my nurse who told me to keep moving and staying active and helping me when contractions came on. A real blessing sent and by the time I asked for an epidural she put a peanut ball in between my legs and kept flipping me from side to side each hour. Which I think really helped made my labor go faster in those last hours. Also my last midwife who delivered my baby did Perineal massages and I only had a first degree tear with no stitches involved. Overall pushing with epidural wasn’t as painful but its more so discomfort than pain. Everyone in the labor room said I made it look easy but in the back of my head it was one of the hardest experiences ever. Very grateful that baby is healthy and happy😌

... Read moreHaving a clear and flexible birth plan is crucial, but labor and delivery often come with surprises. Many first-time mothers plan for natural labor environments, such as dimmed lighting, warm baths, and minimal medical interventions. However, circumstances like prolonged labor or partially broken waters may require adjustments such as Pitocin induction or epidural anesthesia. False labor, which can last several hours, is common and may prolong uncertainty before active labor begins. Staying mobile during labor, as advised by nurses, with positions like side-lying and using tools such as the peanut ball, encourages cervical dilation and can shorten labor. Perineal massage performed by caregivers can help minimize tearing, sometimes avoiding stitches altogether as in a first-degree tear. Pain management strategies evolve during labor stages—from deep breathing and massage in early labor to considering epidural anesthesia later. Epidurals reduce pain but can change pushing positions. Mothers are encouraged to push in ways that feel most effective and comfortable, such as squatting or side-lying, to reduce back pain and improve outcomes. Immediate skin-to-skin contact after birth fosters bonding and supports breastfeeding initiation. While many mothers plan to breastfeed exclusively, supplementing with formula when needed is common and ensures the baby's nutrition. A flexible approach to newborn care respects both mother and infant's needs, including feeding schedules and rooming-in policies. Understanding that each labor experience is unique helps set realistic expectations. Preparation includes knowing medical procedures like delayed cord clamping, avoiding unnecessary interventions like routine Foley catheters or constant cervical checks, and advocating for an environment that respects privacy and comfort. Sharing birth stories like this helps other mothers prepare emotionally and practically for the unexpected in childbirth.
