Dressing in Your Twenties Is Weird😭

Lately, getting dressed feels harder than it should. If I dress too polished, I look way older than I feel. If I wear jeans and a jacket, I feel like I’m copying today’s teenagers.

There’s this awkward space in your twenties where you don’t want to look frumpy or “mumsy,” but you also don’t want to look like you’re trying to relive high school. And somehow, stores don’t help. Everything is either ultra-cropped or aggressively professional.

I stand in front of my closet thinking, Who am I dressing for? And more importantly, what age am I dressing as?

Does anyone else struggle with this? How do you dress in a way that feels right for you?

... Read moreDo you ever feel stuck between styles, always looking either too old or too teenage? This feeling is common for many in their twenties who are navigating their identity through fashion. Dressing in your twenties can feel like a constant balancing act. On one hand, you want to avoid looking frumpy or 'mumsy,' which sometimes happens when you lean towards more traditional or professional attire. On the other hand, you want to steer clear of styles that feel like high school throwbacks or overly trendy pieces that cater to teenagers. Stores often don’t cater to this awkward transitional phase well. Many trendy clothes tend to be ultra-cropped or casual, appealing to teens, while more professional, polished outfits might seem too grown-up or serious. This leaves people searching for a middle ground, trying to figure out who they are dressing for and what image they want to project. One useful approach is to think of your personal style as a curated collection that blends elements of comfort, maturity, and youthful energy. For example, instead of full cropped tops, try pairing high-waisted jeans with a slightly oversized shirt or blazer to create a look that is both chic and age-appropriate. Neutral tones mixed with occasional pops of color can help keep your wardrobe grounded yet interesting. Additionally, incorporating classic wardrobe staples such as tailored pants, quality footwear, and versatile accessories allows for a polished appearance without feeling stiff or out of touch with current trends. Layering is also a key styling tool—think lightweight jackets or cardigans that can add dimension without overwhelming your look. It’s important to remember that fashion is ultimately about expressing yourself and feeling confident. Experimentation is part of the journey, so don’t be afraid to try new shapes, fabrics, or brands until you find what resonates with your evolving style identity. Seek inspiration from a variety of sources including fashion bloggers in their twenties, style magazines, or social media communities where authenticity is prioritized over perfection. In essence, dressing in your twenties means blending an awareness of your changing lifestyle, professional ambitions, and personal preferences. By choosing adaptable pieces that can transition seamlessly from casual to formal settings, you can overcome this 'in-between' style space and dress in a way that truly feels right for you.

What feels right to me is jeans, & a nice tee shirt, or sometimes a nicer blouse. I am 74. This is my comfort clothes. I do dress nicer when the occasion rises. But to just run to the store to get something quickly, I go in comfort. Does this look silly? Most women my age, dress that way around this farm country.
