Hair product reviews

I have oily hair and a very dry scalp. As I’ve gotten older, I’ve tried to find ways to combat the different hair issues. I use Royal Oils every night on my scalp and the L’Oréal Elvive oil erasing every Sunday. I have seen quite the difference in my hair. I’ve been using both for the last 7-8 months.

... Read moreIt's so frustrating dealing with oily hair, especially when you also have a dry, itchy scalp! My initial post shared my go-to products, Royal Oils for that pesky dry scalp and L'Oréal Elvive Oil Erasing for my oily roots. But honestly, finding those two gems was just part of my journey. Over the past few years, I've learned so much about managing this tricky hair type, and I want to share some extra tips that have made a huge difference for me. First off, let's talk about washing. It might sound counterintuitive, but washing your hair too often can actually make it more oily. Your scalp produces oil (sebum) to protect itself, and if you strip it away too frequently, it goes into overdrive to compensate. I've found that trying to stretch washes, even by one day, gradually helps. On those in-between days, a good dry shampoo can be a lifesaver. When you do wash, make sure the water isn't too hot, as hot water can stimulate oil production. I also exclusively shampoo my scalp and roots, letting the suds run down to the ends, and condition only from mid-lengths to ends, completely avoiding my scalp. This helps prevent weighing down roots and adding unnecessary moisture where I already have too much. Next, consider your product choices beyond just shampoo and conditioner. Heavy styling products, especially those with silicones or oils (unless they're specifically for oil control like L'Oréal Elvive Oil Erasing), can contribute to greasiness. I tend to stick to lightweight sprays or mousses if I need styling. And always, always make sure you rinse your hair thoroughly. Product residue is a huge culprit for making hair feel heavy and oily quickly. Now, about that dry, itchy scalp—it's a common companion to oily hair! This is where products like Royal Oils by Head & Shoulders have been a game-changer for me. I learned that ingredients like Pyrithione Zinc are fantastic for addressing dandruff and dryness, while cooling Menthol & Peppermint Oil can provide instant relief from itchiness. What I love about my Royal Oils elixir is that it’s lightweight and doesn’t add to the oiliness of my roots, which is crucial. If you have curly & coily crowns, finding products that address both dryness and oiliness without stripping your natural texture is key. Look for hydrating ingredients without heavy oils. Beyond products, lifestyle plays a role. Have you ever noticed your hair gets oilier when you're stressed? I definitely have! Finding ways to manage stress, whether it's through exercise, meditation, or just taking some quiet time, can indirectly help your scalp health. Also, believe it or not, what you eat can impact your skin and scalp. While not a magic bullet, a balanced diet rich in vitamins and minerals is generally good for overall health, including your hair. Finally, resist the urge to touch your hair constantly! Every time you run your hands through your hair, you’re transferring oils and dirt from your fingers to your strands. Brushing too much can also distribute oil from your scalp down to your ends, making your whole head look greasy faster. A gentle brush to detangle is usually enough. Finding the right balance for oily hair and a dry scalp is a marathon, not a sprint. It took me 7-8 months to truly see a significant difference, as I mentioned with my Royal Oils and L'Oréal Elvive routine. Don't get discouraged if you don't see results overnight. Experiment, pay attention to how your hair reacts, and be consistent. You'll get there!
