My favorite thing about this book, actually this duology, is that while this isn’t my normal genre, it pulled me in and kept me interested from the very beginning. This is also one of the very few YA books I’ve read where I’ve felt connected to the characters. Normally, it’s hard for me to connect to the YA characters because I’ve got a child that age, and I’m in a different chapter of life. Ario and his crew, though, were all relatable in their own ways, even the ones that I didn’t care for in this book. Ahem, Taerun.
Lauren has a way of captivating you with her world-building and the beautiful scenes she paints with her writing. I loved that I could visualize every scene and character.
Ario and Kiojah both had moments of growth while also keeping true to themselves and the stubborn individuals they can be.
I really enjoyed meeting the new characters, especially Cahira. You could feel the bada** radiating off of her, and it’s so hard not to like her.
I think the only thing I didn’t love about this was all of the miscommunication. That is not my favorite trope, so that’s definitely a me issue.
I can’t wait to see what Lauren writes next.

She radiates such a powerful, 'bada**' energy that I immediately fell in love with her. It’s rare to find a cast of characters in YA fantasy that feels so authentic and relatable, but Lauren O'Brien truly nails it here. While the original review mentioned the miscommunication trope, which isn't always my favorite, I found that in 'Tide Keeper,' it served to enhance the character development rather than frustrate. It added layers to the challenges Kiojah and Ario faced, making their triumphs even more satisfying. This isn't just a simple tale; it's an exploration of loyalty, courage, and finding your place in a world filled with magic and peril. If you love stories with strong characters, intricate world-building, and a healthy dose of adventure featuring merfolk and pirates, then 'Tide Keeper' is definitely one to add to your list.
