Winter is all about cozy vibes, and for me, that extends to my fragrance wardrobe! While my original post touched on some beloved gourmand perfume layering combos that got me through the colder months, I wanted to dive deeper into how you can truly master the art of layering, especially when incorporating body lotion for that extra oomph. It’s not just about smelling good; it’s about creating a rich, long-lasting scent experience that feels like a warm hug. So, why should you bother layering with body lotion? Simple: hydration and longevity. Fragrance adheres better to moisturized skin, meaning your beautiful winter scents will last significantly longer. Plus, a complementary lotion can enhance, deepen, or even subtly alter your perfume, creating a truly unique aroma. This is especially true for gourmand scents, where a good base can make all the difference. Here’s how I approach layering my favorite winter fragrances with body lotions: Start with a Hydrating Base: Right after showering, when your skin is still slightly damp, apply an unscented or subtly scented body lotion. If you choose a scented one, make sure its notes complement your perfume. For instance, if I'm planning to wear something like Vanilla 28 Kayali or Eilish Billie Eilish, I might use a simple vanilla-scented lotion to boost that warm, sweet base. For a more complex scent like Yum Pistachio Gelato Kayali or Caramel & Pistachio Ietlee, a plain, rich cream works beautifully, or a lotion with a subtle nutty or vanilla undertone. Match Your Gourmand Profiles: The beauty of gourmands is their delicious and often universally appealing notes. Think about what you want to emphasize. If you love coffee notes, like in Vanilla Latte Sand + Fog or Latte+Nectar Michael Malul, an unscented lotion followed by a subtle coffee or caramel body mist could create an incredible depth before you apply the perfume itself. For marshmallow-heavy scents like Marshmallows Ellis Brooklyn or Yum Boujee Marshmallow Kayali, a sweet, sugary, or even creamy vanilla lotion would be perfect. Consider Fruity Gourmands: Don't forget about those delicious fruity gourmands! If you're opting for something like Apple Love Ellis Brooklyn or Forbidden Apple Chris Collins, a plain moisturizer followed by a very light, natural apple or red berry scented body cream can lift the fruit notes and make them sing. This adds a juicy dimension to your otherwise cozy winter scent. Application Technique: Apply your lotion liberally to your pulse points (wrists, neck, décolletage) and anywhere else you apply perfume. Once it's absorbed, spray your chosen winter perfume directly on top. The lotion acts like a primer, locking in the scent. I also sometimes like to use a complementary body oil for an even richer, longer-lasting effect, especially when wearing heavier gourmands like those with prominent caramel or toffee notes, such as Vanilla Toffee Sand + Fog. Don't Overdo It: While layering is fun, less is often more. You want your scents to blend harmoniously, not compete. Start with a small amount of lotion and a couple of sprays of perfume, then add more if needed. The goal is to create a delightful, lingering aura, not an overwhelming cloud. Experimenting with different body lotions and perfumes is half the fun! There are so many incredible combinations to discover beyond just perfumes. By incorporating a good body lotion into your routine, you’re not just smelling great; you’re enhancing your entire winter fragrance experience for ultimate coziness and lasting power.
