Suspension Yoga 🧘🏾‍♀️✨

... Read moreHey everyone! Since my last post about trying suspension yoga for my 30for30 self-growth challenge, I've had so many of you ask for more details! It truly was an experience, and I wanted to dive a bit deeper into what it's all about and why I think it's worth trying, especially if you're on your own wellness or weight loss journey, just like I am after hitting my 30-pound goal! So, what exactly is suspension yoga? Imagine traditional yoga, but with the added support (and challenge!) of a soft fabric hammock suspended from the ceiling. You use this hammock, often made of a strong, vibrant material like the teal fabric hammocks I used, to support your weight, deepen stretches, and even perform inversions without putting pressure on your neck or spine. In my class, we were mostly inverted, hanging upside down with our heads close to the blue mat below – it was exhilarating and a bit scary at first! For me, the biggest draw was the chance to try something completely new and push my boundaries. After working hard on my weight loss, I felt stronger, but this was a whole new level of physical and mental challenge. I remember feeling a bit wobbly when I first got into the hammock, trying to figure out how to trust the fabric and my own core strength. But that feeling of conquering something difficult? Pure growth! It's incredible for building core strength, increasing flexibility, and decompressing the spine. Plus, simply being inverted can boost circulation and give you a fresh perspective – literally! If you're thinking of trying a suspension yoga class, here are a few tips based on my experience: Wear comfortable, close-fitting clothing: Think leggings (like the black leggings I wore) and a top that won't ride up when you're upside down. You don't want loose fabric getting in the way or exposing too much! Avoid heavy meals beforehand: Being inverted on a full stomach is a recipe for discomfort. A light snack an hour or two before is usually fine. Listen to your body: It's okay to take breaks or modify poses. The instructors are usually great at offering alternatives. Don't push yourself too hard on your first go. Embrace the unknown: It might feel awkward or challenging at first, but that's part of the fun! Let go of expectations and just enjoy the unique sensation of floating and stretching. Stay hydrated: Always a good idea for any physical activity. Suspension yoga isn't just about the physical workout; it's a fantastic tool for mental wellness too. The focus required to balance and move in the hammock can be incredibly meditative, helping to quiet your mind and reduce stress. For someone like me on a self-growth journey, it’s a powerful reminder that I'm capable of more than I think, both physically and mentally. It taught me perseverance and the joy of stepping outside my comfort zone. So, would I recommend it? Absolutely! Especially if you're looking to shake up your fitness routine, explore new ways to move your body, or simply find a unique path to self-improvement. It's a challenging but ultimately incredibly rewarding experience that could be a fantastic addition to your wellness lifestyle. Give it a try and let me know how it goes!
