played in my front garden yesterday!

The prior owner had some plants but mostly a garden area of red rocks. I could have done more last year, but grass over took everything there. I'm not sure what I want to do with the rocks, but at least I want to till the area and try to put some other plants in there.

... Read moreOkay, so like many of you, I've been staring at a challenging spot in my garden, specifically that awkward steep slope right in front of the house. It's not just a visual challenge; it's a real head-scratcher when it comes to landscaping! My prior owner left a bunch of red rocks and some plants, but mostly, it was just overtaken by patchy grass. After seeing all that disturbed soil from my initial clearing, I knew I needed a solid plan for a low-maintenance hillside garden. First off, for anyone tackling a similar steep slope, the biggest hurdles are usually erosion, watering, and just getting anything to grow well. I've learned that good soil preparation is key. Before planting, I really worked on tilling the area – you can see some of that muddy, disturbed soil in my pics! It's all about improving drainage and aeration, especially when you're dealing with gravity pulling everything downwards. I also spent a good amount of time removing those old brown and grey rocks and figuring out where they might be better utilized, or if I needed to bring in some new ones for terracing. When it comes to planting on a hillside, low maintenance is my mantra. Who wants to be constantly scrambling up and down a slope to prune or water? I've been researching drought-tolerant groundcovers like creeping thyme, sedum, and certain varieties of low-growing junipers. These are amazing because they spread out, help with erosion control, and once established, require very little water. Native plants are another fantastic option for low-maintenance steep slope landscaping because they're already adapted to your local climate and soil conditions. Think about things that thrive with minimal fuss, like certain ornamental grasses or perennial flowers that don't need constant deadheading. Another tip I picked up is considering terracing or incorporating small retaining walls if the slope is really severe. This not only creates flatter planting beds but also adds visual interest and helps with water retention. You don't have to go for massive stone walls; even small timber or rock borders can make a huge difference, especially if you have an abundance of rocks already! It helps prevent that newly planted soil from washing away during heavy rains, which is a common issue with slopes. Watering can be tricky. I'm looking into drip irrigation systems, as hand-watering a slope is just asking for runoff and wasted water. A drip system delivers water directly to the plant roots, which is super efficient for hillside planting. Mulching heavily after planting is also a game-changer – it conserves moisture, suppresses weeds, and further helps stabilize the soil. My vision for this landscape garden is something beautiful yet practical. It's a journey, and I'm excited to see how this challenging area transforms. If you're also staring down a steep slope, don't be intimidated! With a bit of planning, the right plant choices, and some smart landscaping techniques, you can create a stunning, low-maintenance garden that's the envy of the neighborhood. Keep an eye out for my updates as I continue this garden makeover!
