Informed decisions during pregnancy
This is definitely a controversial topic, but it's an important one.
As a doula, my role is to help you understand the risks and benefits of every choice so you can make the most informed decision for YOU.
As a mom myself, though, I would personally never use weed during pregnancy and here's why:
If weed alters and affects MY brain and lungs, why would I assume it wouldn't affect my developing baby?
Does THC cross the placenta?
Yes, studies show that it does.
And the research we do have consistently shows associations with low birth weight, preterm birth, some possible neurodevelopmental effects (often showing up later in childhood), and impacts on the placenta and pregnancy complications.
Studies also suggest possible increased risks for the woman giving birth, including, hemorrhaging, high blood pressure, preeclampsia, and placental abruption.
Is more research needed? Absolutely.
But the studies we do have largely point in the same direction and are consistent with their findings. Which is important when you're weighing your options.
At the end of the day, YOU are in charge of your body and your choices. But making an informed choice means looking at the risks, not ignoring them. And just because someone else used weed and had a healthy baby doesn't mean the outcome is the same for everyone.
Your decisions matter. So does having the full picture.
