Good News, Malaysia has officially confirmed that Ice Hockey will be included in the competition programme for the 34th SEA Games in 2027.
As host of the 34th SEA Games, the Olympic Council of Malaysia (OCM) chaired a preparation meeting with the Southeast Asian Games Federation (SEAGF). During the meeting, delegates approved the inclusion of five additional sports: Kabaddi, Dancesport, Teqball, Padel, and Ice Hockey. They also approved two new disciplines under existing sports: Chinlone under Sepak Takraw and Equestrian Polo under Equestrian.

As a long-time ice skating enthusiast living in Malaysia, I am truly excited about the confirmation of Ice Hockey as part of the 34th SEA Games in 2027. This milestone is not only great news for fans of winter sports but also a remarkable step forward for the sporting diversity of our region. Historically, Malaysia’s tropical climate hasn’t lent itself to ice sports, but with modern indoor arenas, this barrier is fading rapidly. From my own experience attending ice skating events and training sessions in Kuala Lumpur, I know how passionate and talented local athletes are becoming in ice hockey. The introduction of both men's and women's team competitions will foster greater inclusivity and inspire more youth to consider ice sports. It also opens up promising opportunities for Malaysia to develop internationally competitive teams in preparation for the games. Beyond ice hockey, the inclusion of sports like Kabaddi, Dancesport, Teqball, and Padel adds vibrant cultural and unique physical expressions to the SEA Games lineup. For instance, Kabaddi, with its origins in South Asia, will attract fans familiar with traditional sports, while Dancesport showcases artistry combined with athleticism, appealing to a broader audience. The SEA Games' incorporation of new disciplines under existing sports such as Chinlone under Sepak Takraw and Equestrian Polo also highlights regional uniqueness and tradition preservation. These additions enhance the event’s richness and provide diverse viewing experiences for sports enthusiasts.
